WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – For the first time since 2002, the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team won its season opener, doing so in dominating fashion 14-4 over SUNY-Maritime on Saturday, Feb. 27. Senior attackman Nate Walter posted seven points on five goals and two assists.

The Warriors found the back of the net early and often. Lycoming jumped out to a 13-1 lead in the game. Freshman Pat Mahar scored not only the first goal of the season, but his first career goal as well, taking an assist from Ed Williams. After another two Warrior goals, the Privateers (0-1) put one in net before Lycoming exploded on a 10-goal run, including four from Walter. During the run, senior Brad Schaeffer dished out all three of his assists.

Lycoming was the benefactor of a three-minute non-releasable penalty after a Maritime player got caught playing with an illegal stick. The Warriors scored four goals during the penalty, three of which came out of Walter’s stick and another from Steven Henz.

Joining Walter as a multi-goal scorer, was sophomore Ethan Payne, who posted three, as well as one assist. Williams and Schaeffer were the leaders in the assist column, each handing out three assists. Josh Perrault and Walter each dished out two helpers.

Led by senior Mike Doherty’s 14 groundballs, the Warriors dominated, picking up 44 to the Privateers 17. Doherty owned the faceoff dot throughout the day, going 18-of-24 (75.0 percent). On defense, senior Kevin Devenney  played a shut-down day, causing six turnovers and nabbing seven groundballs.

In the cage, junior Alan Antinarelli was up to the task, facing 26 Maritime shots and making 15 saves, including eight in the fourth quarter. He also picked up four groundballs.

Lycoming is on the road for its next game on Wednesday, March 3 when it travels to Carlisle, Pa. to face Dickinson College. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
