Men's basketball falls in Commonwealth title game, await possible at-large bid

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – In the Commonwealth Conference championship game of the 2009-10 men’s basketball season, Lycoming College fell 87-74 to Albright College on Saturday, Feb. 27.

Second-year head coach Guy Rancourt has guided his program to a 21-6 overall record and 10-4 mark in the conference, a big turnaround from 2008-09, in which the Warriors went 11-13 and 4-8 in the league.

The two squads battled throughout the first half, which featured six ties and 15 lead changes. Albright took a narrow 38-35 advantage into halftime. Freshman Ihsaan Davis put up eight points in the stanza, hitting three of his five field goal attempts, including two-for-three from beyond the arc. Senior James Oberlies, sophomore Mike Bradley and freshman Jerald Williams all posted six points. Bradley led the squad with four rebounds, with two on each of the offensive and defensive glass.

Lycoming continued to battle through the second half, with two players reaching double-digits in scoring. Junior Will Kelly led the team with 13 points, followed by Eric Anthony’s 12 points. Kelly shot 50.0 percent (five-for-10) from the field in the second half. He also led the Warriors on the boards, grabbing five rebounds, three of which were on defense.

Kelly finished the game with a third-best 18 points, followed by Anthony’s 14. Davis recorded 12 points and Williams rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11. Kelly grabbed a team-high eight rebounds while Bradley pulled down seven.

The Warriors hit 35.8 percent (24-67) of their field goals, while also having one of their best days at the free throw line, hitting 20-of-25 (80.0 percent) of their attempts. Lycoming outrebounded Albright 40-39, including 15 on offense.

Albright also had four players in double figures. Zac Shaeffer put up a game-high 24, and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Matt Ashcroft followed with 22 points while Derek Hall and Shane Irwin posted 14 and 12, respectively. Hall had a game-best 14 rebounds, 11 of which were defensive.

Lycoming awaits an announcement for a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. Selections will be announced at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 1. Please check back tomorrow for news regarding the bid.
