WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – With a 76-74 win over Widener University on Saturday, Feb. 20, the Lycoming College men’s basketball team sealed a No. 1 seed for the upcoming Commonwealth Conference tournament.
After the Pride (15-8, 6-8) knotted the score at 74, senior guard Eric Anthony hit a fade-away jumper with 5.3 seconds left in the game for the win. Lycoming earned the No. 1 seed after Albright College lost 77-66 to Messiah College.
In the first half, Lycoming (20-5, 10-4) built an 11-point lead, but Widener fought back. The Warriors took a narrow 32-30 margin into halftime. Freshman
Ihsaan Davis put up a game-high 10 points. Sophomore
Mike Bradley put a team second-best six points while Anthony and
Will Kelly each tallied four. Anthony led the Warriors on the glass, pulling down four rebounds. A sloppy first half had the two teams combine for 25 turnovers. The Warriors came up with nine steals, three of which belonged to Davis.
The two squads were evenly matched through the second stanza, with both squads posting 44 points.
Anthony took control in the second half, registering 16 points. Kelly and
Jerald Williams each grabbed three steals. Kelly and Davis each tallied seven points while Williams handed out five assists. Lycoming continued to press on defense, coming up with 11 steals.
Anthony capped his final regular season game with 20 points and seven rebounds, while also recording three assists and three steals. He hit four of his six three-point attempts and went two-for-two from the charity stripe. Davis finished the game with 17 points and four steals, while Kelly posted 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals. Williams registered a game-high five steals and six assists. He also chipped in five points and grabbed four rebounds.
Lycoming’s bench was crucial in the win. The Warrior substitutes posted 44 points. Lycoming also recorded 39 points off of 30 Pride turnovers. The Warriors shot 41.3 (26-of-63) percent from the field, including nine-of-17 from beyond the arc. Lycoming struggled on rebounds, pulling down just 29 to Widener’s 38.
Widener had five players reach double-digit points, paced by Perry Wright with 17. Jack Brennan tallied 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Onyi Ezeala put up 12 points while BJ Smith and Bobby Edmunds both posted 11 points.
With the No. 1 seed secured, the Warriors begin their quest for the Commonwealth Conference title on Wednesday, Feb. 24 when they host Elizabethtown College at 7 p.m. in Lamade Gymnasium.
