Women's basketball drops road game 64-43 to No. 17 Messiah

The Lycoming College women’s basketball team fell to Messiah College, currently ranked No. 17 in the USA Today ESPN Div. III Coaches Poll, 64-43 on Tuesday, Feb. 16. The Lady Warriors’ offense was paced by Allison Mock’s eight points.

Lycoming (7-16, 4-8) held the conference’s top field goal shooting team (44.5 percent) to just 38.7 percent in the first half thanks to the Warriors forcing the Falcons into seven turnovers. Kaitlyn Ober was Lycoming’s leading scorer in the first stanza, posting six points, while also grabbing six rebounds, five of which came on defense. Ober also had one of Lycoming's two blocks. Rebecca Leid tallied four points and registered the Warriors’ other block. Mock finished the half with three points and two assists.

The Falcons took a 31-20 lead into half, behind nine points from Anna Walker and another eight from Nicky Hess.

Mock found her stroke in the second half, hitting both of her field goal attempts, including a three pointer for five points. She also snagged two steals in the half. Off the bench, Meagan Pittius chipped in an additional five points and five rebounds. Amanda Hart also posted five points and had the Warrior's only block of the second 20 minutes.

The Warriors had 11 different scorers, led by Mock’s eight. She was followed by Leid and Ober who both put up six points and grabed six rebounds. Pittius tallied an additional five boards.

Lycoming was strong on the glass through the whole game. Messiah averages 36.1 rebounds a game, and was held to 32, while the Warriors grabbed 31. The Falcons’ Dori Gyori, the third-best rebounder in the league, led the game in rebounds with seven, below her season average of 8.8.

Messiah’s Hess led the scoring with 16, followed by Walker’s 13 points and Gyori’s 11. The Falcons’ (20-3, 10-2) recorded coming up with 14 steals and 17 assists.

Lycoming will play in its final road game of the season on Thursday, Feb. 18 in a rescheduled game with Elizabethtown College. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
