WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. –
Sporting pink uniforms for breast cancer awareness and its annual PinkZone game, the Lycoming College women’s basketball hosted Alvernia University in a Commonwealth Conference match up. The Lady Warriors fell to the Crusaders 81-61 on Saturday, Feb. 13.
All proceeds from the game will benefit the Kathryn Candor Lundy Breast Health Center in Williamsport, Pa.
Lycoming held a 12-7 lead in the first half, but the Crusaders surged, going on a 33-7 run midway through the period to take a 41-21 lead into the locker room.
Rebecca Leid led Lycoming in scoring with seven points, followed by
Jessica Zerbee and
Rebecca Spencer, each putting up five points.
Kaitlyn Ober was the half’s leading rebounder with seven.
In the second half, every Lycoming player on the roster saw time on the court. Freshman
Rachael Scheller put up nine points off the bench, while fellow freshman
Sandra Szczepenak went three-for-four from the floor, recording six points. Zerbee tallied five points and two assists.
Alvernia (13-8, 7-4) took over in the second half, leading by as many as 28. Lycoming shot 15-of-43 (34.9 percent) from the field in the second half, double its point total from the first half with 40.
The Crusaders’ Alex Velazquez was the game’s leading scorer with 16 points, while also grabbing eight boards. Joanna Graber posted 14 points and Allie Toczylowski chipped in 13. Alvernia recorded 31 defensive rebounds and had 21 assists.
Zerbee finished as Lycoming’s leading scorer, posting 10 points while also handing out three assists and recording a steal. Scheller recorded nine points, all of which were scored in the second half. Spencer and Leid each chipped in eight points. Ober was the Warriors’ leading rebounder, pulling in eight boards.
Lycoming hit 23 of its 68 attempts from the field. The Lady Warriors grabbed 35 rebounds, 18 on offense and 17 on defense. Scheller had five of the team’s 10 steals.
The Lady Warriors begin the final week of the regular season, playing two of their next three games on the road. Lycoming opens the week on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at Messiah College. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
