Second half shooters take down Alvernia 84-77

Behind a team shooting percentage over 50 percent in the second half, the Lycoming College men’s basketball team took down Alvernia University 84-77 on Saturday, Feb. 13. Two Warriors posted 20 or more points.

The Warriors (18-4, 8-3) jumped out to a hot start, holding a 20-10 advantage midway into the first half. But the Crusaders rallied as Lycoming took a narrow 38-35 lead into halftime. Senior guard Eric Anthony posted 10 points in the first stanza while also grabbing three rebounds. Will Kelly recorded nine points and Mike Bradley tallied eight points and three steals. Jerald Williams dished out four assists.

As a team, Lycoming shot 38.9 (14-36) percent from the floor. The Warrior missed just one free throw in the first half, going seven for eight. Rebounding was key for Lycoming in the period, outrebounding the Crusaders 23-16, including 10 on the offensive side of the court.

In the second half, Bradley dominated on offense, putting a second-best 15 points, while also pulling down five rebounds. Kelly also reached double-digits in the second 20 minutes with 11. The Warriors tallied seven steals in the stanza, paced by Bradley’s three.

Lycoming shot 57.1 percent, hitting 16 of their 28 attempts in the half. The Warriors held a narrow 13-12 margin in rebounding, grabbing 10 on defense.

Bradley finished the game with a season second-best and game-high 23 points. He pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Kelly posted 20 points, going six of 10 from the field and seven of eight from the charity stripe. Anthony had 18 points with four assists and four steals. Williams tallied seven points and had seven helpers and three steals.

The Warriors shot 46.9 percent in the game, hitting 30 of their 64 attempts. Rebounds and ball movement were crucial to the victory. Lycoming finished with 36 rebounds to Alvernia’s 28. 24 of Lycoming’s 36 made attempts were assisted.

Alvernia (15-8, 6-6) had three players in double-figures, led by Stefan Thompson with 21, hitting five shots from beyond the arc. Tad Gillis had 20 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Nick Rivera rounded out the double-digit scorers with 19.

Lycoming enters the final week of the regular season with three games, two of which are on the road. The Warriors are at Messiah College on Tuesday, Feb. 16. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
