WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Sophomore Ihsaan Davis (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King) scored a team-high 18 points, the 13th straight game that he reached double figures, but the Lycoming College men’s basketball team fell t o a hot-shooting Juniata College, 75-72, in non-conference action on Tuesday night at the Kennedy Student Recreation Center.
Sophomore Jerald Williams (Riverdale, Md./Bladensburg) added eight points, eight assists and two steals and freshman Michael Rudy (Danville, Pa./Danville) scored a career-high 11 points to go with five rebounds and two steals. Senior Will Kelly (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) notched 10 points for the Warriors (5-3 overall).
The Warriors’ aggressive defensive style did force the Eagles (4-4 overall) into 25 turnovers, but the Eagles made the most of their shots, hitting 56 (28-of-50) percent from the field, while Lycoming itself hit a respectable 45 (27-of-60) percent.
With the score 58-50 with 8:14 left, the Warriors started to rally as layups from freshman Kevin Anthony (Atlanta, Ga./Bridgton Academy) and junior Mike Bradley (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep) cut the lead to four points. A 3-pointer from Kelly with 5:33 left cut the lead to three points, a pair of free throws from Williams answered an Eagles’ bucket and a steal by Davis led to a layup from Rudy to make it a one-point game at 64-63 with 4:01 left.
After a free throw from Brian Scholly gave Juniata a two-point lead, Kelly hit a jumper to tie the game at 65. The teams traded a pair of buckets before the Eagles used a free throw and back-to-back layups from Austin Ankney and Bruce Knowles to take a 72-67 lead with 1:47 left to take control of the game. Davis kept the game close for the Warriors, hitting a layup and a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left that made it 73-72, but Dan Sekulski hit a pair of free throws to ice the game with seven seconds left.
The teams traded through two ties and three lead changes in the early moments of the second half before the Eagles used a 14-4 run to take a 51-43 lead with 11:55 left and the Eagles were able to sustain that lead before the Warriors’ made their run to tie the game at 65.
The Eagles took an 18-10 lead in the first eight minutes of the game before a trey from Davis cut the lead to five points, spurring six straight Warrior points. The Eagles got the lead to six before a run of eight straight Warrior points was capped by a Davis layup that made is 24-22 with 5:24 left. From there, the Warriors kept the pressure on with a layup by Jerald Williams with 3:21 left making it 30-24.
However, Juniata got the lead back to one before halftime by scoring the last five points of the half to make it 34-33.
Sekulski finished with a game-high 29 points to go with five rebounds and two steals. Alex Raymond added 15 points and three assists and Ankney posted 11 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
The Warriors will get back on the court Saturday, Dec. 11, when they head to Wilkes University for a 1 p.m. start.
