WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior Chelsea Shearer (East York, Pa./Dallastown) scored a career-high 18 points and senior Kaitlyn Ober (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) added All-Classic accolades for the second time in her career, but the Lycoming College women’s basketball team couldn’t overcome a strong shooting performance from Richard Stockton, falling 69-59, in the final game of the sixth annual Hoops for Hounds Classic at Lamade Gymnasium on Thursday, Dec. 30.
No. 19 Lebanon Valley College (10-1 overall) earned the Hoops for Hounds title after beating Ramapo (7-4 overall), 62-48, in the first game. Suzie Noyes was named the classic’s MVP, as she capped off Thursday by scoring her 1,000th career point on a baseline jumper in the last minute of the win.
Lycoming (5-6 overall) kept within eight points of Richard Stockton (8-4 overall) for much of the second half, but couldn’t draw within two possessions in the game’s final 12 minutes despite outscoring Stockton, 36-35 in the half.
The Warriors opened the second half with six straight points, with all six points coming from freshman Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) during the run, as her last layup of the run cut the lead to 34-29 with 16:33 left.
However, the Ospreys scored the next seven points, with a 3-pointer from All-Classic member Aspen Price-Perry making it a 41-29 Stockton lead with 14:57 left. One of Shearer’s four treys stopped the run, though, and four more points from Antonelli and a bucket from Ober brought the Warriors back within five at 42-37 with 13:38 left.
The teams traded buckets from there, and a trey from sophomore Rachael Scheller (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) made it 47-42 with 12:27 left, but another trey from Price-Perry and another from Che’Na Thompson helped the Ospreys’ take an 11-point lead and the Warriors didn’t get closer than eight the rest of the way.
Richard Stockton scored 22 points in the paint and shot 54 percent (14-of-26) from the floor in the first half to take a 34-23 lead into the locker room. The Ospreys used a 12-3 run late in the first half to take a 26-15 lead, spurred on by Aspen Price-Perry, who scored six points during the run. One of two first-half 3-pointers from Shearer cut the lead to seven points with 2:10 left in the half, but the Ospreys closed the half on a 6-2 run to extend the lead back to 11.
Three Warriors finished in double-figures led by Shearer, who posted 18 points, four assists and three steals. Antonelli added 13 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals and Ober posted 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Senior Rebecca Spencer (Granville Summitt, Pa./Troy) posted six points, four rebounds and three assists and junior Erin Connaghan (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) posted three points, four assists, two steals and eight rebounds.
Price-Perry led the Ospreys with 20 points, three assists and two rebounds and LaTonya Oliver posted 14 points and a Hoops for Hounds Classic-record 17 rebounds. She also posted five blocks. Thompson added 13 points and six rebounds and Julia Fagan posted nine points, five rebounds and three steals.
The Warriors get back on the floor on Tuesday, Jan. 4 when they head to Marywood for a 6 p.m. game.
