BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Senior Troy Hayre (Falls Church, Va./McLean) posted his second straight win over a nationally-ranked wrestler on Friday night to lead the Lycoming College wrestling team, but the Warriors fell to No. 12 College at Brockport, 23-9, in Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference action.
Hayre, facing off against eighth-ranked 184-pounder Lukas Pariso, posted a second period escape to take an early lead. In the third period, after Pariso chose the bottom position, he tied the match with an escape. However, Hayre won the match with a takedown late in the period, adding onto his second straight win over a top-10 ranked wrestler, beating sixth-ranked Nate Murren of Ursinus in the third-place match at Messiah’s Petrofes Invitational.
The Warriors (5-6 overall, 1-2 ECWC) took an early 3-0 lead against the Golden Eagles (1-0 overall, 1-0 ECWC), as freshman Stephen Hinton (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) posted a 5-3 win over Jose Vasquez, as Hinton posted takedowns in the first and second periods to take control of the match.
The Eagles won the next two matches to take a 7-3 lead before senior Isaiah Britton (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) made it a one-point match with a 7-2 win over Eliah Golding. Britton took control of the match with a four-point first period, scoring a takedown and a two-point nearfall before adding a third-period takedown and a riding-time point.
The Eagles, however, earned 10 points in the next three matches before Hayre’s upset at 184 pounds, and Brockport closed the match with a pair of decisions to clinch the 23-9 victory.
The Warriors will now take nearly a month off before getting back on the mat for the Pa./N.Y. Duals at Oswego, N.Y., where the Warriors will face off against ECWC foes SUNY Oswego and R.I.T. The match is slated to start at 2 p.m.
