Korbul, Eyer have perfect days as Warriors split four meets at John Reese Duals

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Junior Russ Korbul (Asbury, N.J./Northhampton C.C.) posted four wins, capping his day with his first pin of the season to help lead the Lycoming College wrestling team to two wins in four matches at the John Reese Duals hosted by Wilkes University on Saturday, as the Warriors posted a 24-9 win over SUNY Oneonta and a 32-12 win over Hunter and fell to No. 24 Wilkes, 24-10 and Centenary (N.J.), 32-16.

Sophomore 157-pounder Colton Eyer (Orangeville, Pa./Millville) also posted a perfect day, notching a 3-0 mark during the duals and senior Isaiah Britton (Williamsport, Pa./Loyolsock Township), sophomore Jeff Thomas (Curwensville, Pa./Curwensville Area), senior Troy Hayre (McLean, Va./McLean) and senior Kyle Crouthamel (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) each added two wins for Lycoming (3-3 overall).

Against Oneonta, the Warriors took an early lead as junior Stephen Hinton (Montclair, Pa./Forest Park) posted an 8-2 win over David Bailen at 125 pounds before a pair of Oneonta wins gave them a 6-3 lead. However, a 9-5 win by Britton over Dan Graff at 149 pounds and an 8-2 win by Eyer over Matt Eberlein at 157 pounds gave the lead back to the Warriors. After Oneont tied the match at nine, the Warriors ran off the match’s last 15 points, as Thomas pinned Jimmy Neal in the first period, Hayre posted a 10-7 win over Brian Kramer at 184, Crouthamel posted an 8-1 win over Wignal at 197 and Korbul wrapped up the match with a 6-2 decision against James Lamonica at heavyweight.

Against the 24th-ranked Colonels, Lycoming picked up three wins, as Eyer took a 9-5 decision over Shane Everett, Korbul notched a 14-3 major decision at 197 against Seth Grey and junior Zack Eckstrom (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) added a 6-4 decision against Michael Shannon at heavyweight.

The Warriors won three matches against Centenary as well, with sophomore Dave Exler (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) pinning Jose Vaga in the first period of the 125-pound match, junior Tyler Cunningham (Hadden Township, N.J./Hadden Township) added a pin over Dallas Overki in the 184-poind match and Korbul added a major decision against Jared Crouse, 8-0, at 197 pounds.

In the final round of the duals, the Warriors won seven matches to take control in a 32-12 win over Hunter, as freshman Brett Flexer (Lehigton, Pa./Lehighton Area) posted an 8-4 win over Chris Gogatz at 133 to start the scoring and Britton added a technical fall over Sean Messina at 149 pounds. Eyer posted a 5-3 decision at 157 pounds over Matt Cartusciello. After a technical fall at 165 pounds gave Hunter a 12-11 lead, the Warriors took control, with Thomas and Hayre posting back-to-back pins at 174 and 184 pounds, respectively. Thomas posted his over Jesse Capello-Colon and Hayre got his against Anthony Daly. Crouthamel followed with a 5-0 decision over Trevor Ritchie before Korbul closed out the day with a pin against Oliver Astone.

The Warriors get back on the mat on Saturday, Nov. 20 when they travel to Alliance, Ohio for the Mount Union duals where they will take on Baldwin-Wallace, Mount Union, Ohio Northern and Mount St. Joseph, with head coach Roger Crebs needing two wins to reach 300 in his career, where he would join his college coach, in the 300-win club at Lycoming.
