Warriors close season at Southwestern Halloween Tournament

GEORGETOWN, Texas – A day after becoming the first player in school history to post 2,000 career digs, junior Emily Abel (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) made a run at her own single-season school record for digs, posting 35 digs on Saturday, Oct. 30, to fall eight digs short of the mark to highlight the Lycoming College volleyball team’s final day at the Southwestern Halloween Tournament. The Warriors, however, fell 3-0 to both Austin (25-9, 25-16, 25-15) and Texas-Tyler (25-15, 25-21, 26-24).

 Abel, who made the All-Tournament Team, finished her junior year with 696 digs, the second-most in school history behind her own 704 dig mark set as a sophomore. Abel’s freshman mark of 681 digs is the third-best mark in school history. Abel posted 13 digs against Austin before posting 22 in the season finale against Texas-Tyler.

Against Austin (28-7 overall), the Warriors were led by nine kills and two digs from senior Kelly Rose (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Bishop Hoban). Freshman Katelyn McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) added 16 assists and nine digs and senior Megan Schulze (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) added three kills, four digs and two blocks. Freshman Shaina Preiss (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) also added six digs.

Against Texas-Tyler (15-16 overall), the Warriors were led by eight kills from junior Heather Keller (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco), who added eight digs in the match. Freshman Tanya DeWalt (Mainesburg, Pa./Mansfield) added six kills, seven digs and five blocks and Schulze posted four kills, 12 digs and three blocks. Rose also added four kills and freshman Shelby Gear (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) added six digs. McKillop posted her 12th double-double of the season, as she notched 22 assists and 16 digs.

McKillop finished the season with 872 assists, which ranks seventh in school history and already places her eighth in school history. DeWalt finished the season with 102 blocks, becoming the first player since Lindsey Artz in 2003 and the fourth in school history, to reach 100 blocks as a freshman.

The Warriors conclude the season 15-17 overall and they posted a 1-6 mark in the Commonwealth Conference.
