Warriors win twice to open the Southwestern Halloween Tournament

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Lycoming College volleyball team won its opening two matches at the Southwestern University Halloween Tournament on Friday, winning a thriller in five sets against Concordia (Texas), 16-25, 25-15, 25-19, 23-25, 15-17, before posting a three-set win over NAIA member Huston-Tillotson.

Along the way, senior Megan Schulze (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) became the eighth player in school history to reach 100 blocks in two different seasons in a career and the fifth player to reach 400 career blocks to lead the Warriors (15-15 overall). Schulze posted four blocks against Concordia and one against Huston-Tillotson to finish with 102 blocks on the season and 402 in her career.

Junior Emily Abel posted 41 digs in the five-set match with Concordia and added 23 against Huston-Tillotson to post 64 in the set, cruising past 2,000 in her career. The first athlete in school history to reach the mark, she currently has 2,046 in her career.

Concordia fell to 11-15 overall and Huston-Tillotson fell to 0-27.

The Warriors came from a set down against the Tornadoes to take the victory, led by freshman Shelby Gear (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili), who posted 10 kills and senior Kelly Rose (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Bishop Hoban) added eight kills. 

Kevyn Jackson added 13 kills and Allison Pringle posted nine kills while Grace Baumann posted 27 digs for the Tornadoes.

Against Huston-Tillotson, freshman Tanya DeWalt (Mainesburg, Pa./Mansfield) led the way with 14 kills and freshman Lacey Sollenberger (New Enterprize, Pa./North Bedford) added seven kills in the 25-23, 25-22, 25-20 win.

Chantelia Washington led the Rams with seven kills and Priscilla Craig added six. Faron Bradley added 21 assists and Shauntaga Williams posted 14 digs. April Newcomb added five aces.

The Warriors wrap up their season on Saturday at the Southwestern University Halloween Tournament. Lycoming plays Austin at 10 a.m. before closing the year with noon showdown with Texas-Tyler.
