WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Megan Schulze (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) moved to within three blocks of becoming the eighth player in school history to post two 100-block seasons in a career, but the Lycoming College volleyball team fell victim to a combined 31 kills from Lauren Rees and Lindsay King as Messiah beat Lycoming, 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-23) in the Commonwealth Conference finale for both teams at Lamade Gymnasium on Wednesday, Oct. 27.
Schulze posted eight kills, seven blocks and four digs to lead the Warriors (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley), as the 5-10 middle hitter also moved within three blocks of becoming the fifth player in school history to post 400 career kills. Schulze is already the only player in school history to post 90 blocks in all four years of her career.
Freshman Tanya DeWalt (Mainesburg, Pa./Mansfield) led the Warriors with 12 kills, three digs and two blocks and both freshman Shelby Gear (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) and senior McKenna Warren (Elmira, N.Y./CMS Elmira) added six kills. Gear also posted three blocks.
Freshman Katelyn McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain North) added 32 assists, eight digs and two blocks and junior Emily Abel (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) added three kills and a match-high 16 digs as she moved within 18 digs of becoming the first player in school history to reach 2,000 career digs.
Down 15-11 in the first set, the Warriors fought back into the set by scoring three straight points on Abel’s serve before the Falcons (17-8 overall, 5-2 Commonwealth) posted two points to take an 18-15 lead. The Warriors again fought back with a 5-1 run to tie the set at 19 after a kill from DeWalt. The Falcons again regained the three-point advantage at 23-20, but a kill by DeWalt started a 5-0 run, capped by a service ace by McKillop to help the Warriors win the set, 25-23.
The Falcons took a 5-0 lead in the second set and never led the Warriors within three points en route to the 25-19 win. In the third set, Messiah finished the set on a 17-7 run to take it 25-15.
In the fourth set, the Warriors fought back from a 12-3 deficit, with senior Kelly Rose (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Bishop Hoban) starting the rally with a kill, igniting a 9-1 run. The Falcons managed to take a three-point lead at 15-12, but the Warriors rushed back and a kill from freshman Lacey Sollenberger (New Enterprize, Pa./North Bedford) helped Lycoming take a 17-16 lead. The Warriors took a 23-19 lead, but the Falcons closed out the win with a 6-0 run.
The Falcons were led by 18 kills and nine digs from Rees and King added 13 kills, four digs and three blocks. Ann Reck added eight kills, four digs and three aces and Emily Geib posted 40 assists, two aces and nine digs. Megan Wise posted 14 digs.
Rose, Schulze and Warren were honored in a pre-match ceremony for their efforts for Lycoming volleyball as part of Senior Day.
The Warriors wrap up their season this weekend in Austin, Texas, as they take part in the Southwestern University Halloween Tournament. The Warriors will begin play with matches against Concordia (Texas) and Huston-Tillotson on Friday evening.
