The Lycoming College men’s basketball team eliminated a 13-point deficit against Albright College on Saturday, Jan. 30, but could not pick up the win, falling to the Lions 84-80. It was a tight game throughout, with 14 lead changes and nine ties.
Albright (16-2, 7-1) held a slim 37-36 advantage at half time. The Warriors found themselves down by 13 with 4:46 left in the game. In the second half, Will Kelly (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.) put up 13 points to pull Lycoming within two with 10 seconds on the clock. Senior guard
Eric Anthony put up nine points in the second, including a pair of free throws down the stretch to keep Lycoming’s hopes alive.
In the first half, Lycoming (16-2, 6-2) was led by 11 points from Anthony. Freshman
Jerald Williams recorded seven points and three assists.
Mike Bradley was the rebounding leader for the first half, pulling in five boards. The Warriors outrebounded Albright 23-22 in the first stanza, grabbing 16 defensive rebounds.
Anthony led the Warriors in scoring, finishing with 20 points, hitting all four of his free throw attempts. He also had three assists and two steals. Kelly rounded out his day with 16 points, including three three-pointers. Williams posted a career second-best 14 points while also handing out six helpers.
As a team, the Warriors shot 40.9 percent from the field, going 27-of-66. Lycoming grabbed 37 rebounds, 15 of which came on offense. The Warriors had 24 points from its substitutes, led by
Ihsaan Davis with 10 points.
Albright had three scorers in double-figures, led by Matt Ashcroft’s 22 points. Zac Shaeffer tallied 17 points. Derek Hall was the game’s leading rebounder with nine. He also put up 13 points.
“Albright did a great job attacking our pressure,” said head coach Guy Rancourt. “The league has had a tough time with our defense so far. We need to get back to that intensity.”
Both teams pressured throughout the game, forcing a combined 28 turnovers. Lycoming held the advantage in steals, 7-6. Anthony and Kelly each had two.
Lycoming travels to Lebanon Valley College for its next game on Wednesday, Feb. 3. The Commonwealth Conference matchup is set to begin at 8 p.m. following the women’s game.
