Women's basketball falls 76-52 to No. 5 Kean University

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- In the final game of the Hoops for Hounds Holiday Classic, the Lycoming College women’s basketball team fell to No. 5 Kean University 76-52 on Sunday, Jan. 3. Warrior senior forward Rebecca Leid was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Two minutes into the game, Alicia Engler (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.) put the Warriors (2-10) on the board with a layup. Leid (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) pulled Lycoming to within one point of the Cougars (13-1), 5-4. After Kean built to a seven point lead, three-pointers from freshman Leann Randall (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) and Rebecca Spencer (Granville Summit, Pa./Troy) pulled Lycoming to down just 12-11.

The Cougars hit a three-pointer to go up by four with 10:27 left in the first half. Junior forward Meagan Pittius (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) sank a pair of free throws to pull the Warriors back to within two, 15-13. Kean pulled ahead to a 19-13 advantage, but Engler converted a three-point shot to get Lycoming within three.

Kean built to a 12-point lead, but steady offense from the Warriors allowed Lycoming to cut the advantage to five after Allison Mock (State College, Pa./State College) hit a jumper, followed by a set of free throws from Pittius and a layup from Kaitlyn Ober (Lititz, Pa./Warwick). After a pair of Cougar free throws, Kean’s Melissa Beyruti hit one of her 10 three-pointers to go up 37-27 to end the first half.

Mock opened the scoring in the second half with a three-pointer, but a 15-0 Cougar run over four minutes gave Kean an insurmountable 22-point lead.

Pacing the team in scoring was Mock, posting 11 points. Spencer was second with nine points followed by Leid and Ober with six apiece. Ober lead the game in rebounds, pulling down 11 total, six of which came on offense. Mock chipped in four steals, with Leid and Engler each grabbing two.

As a team, the Warriors' bench outscored the Kean University substitutes 24-21. The Lady Warriors also enjoyed 10 second-chance points, coming on 15 offensive rebounds. The Lady Warriors had a solid day at the free throw line, hitting 11 of their 15 attempts (73.3 percent), while Kean only managed to shoot 36.4 percent (8-of-22)

The Lady Warriors' next game will be Saturday, Jan. 9 when they travel to conference opponent Albright College. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
