WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- In a typical, hard-nosed Lycoming College versus Elizabethtown College game, the Warriors had four players in double-digits, as they downed the Blue Jays 89-74 on Wednesday, Jan. 20. The game featured high scoring offenses, but scrappy play with a combined 41 fouls.
Lycoming extends its overall winning streak to seven, including five straight in Commonwealth Conference play.
The Warriors (14-2, 5-1 Commonwealth), which entered the game leading the league in scoring (80.3 ppg), put their high-octane offense on display by jumping out to an early 13-9 lead by way of two three-point baskets by senior Eric Anthony (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Central Catholic) and strong inside play by sophomore center Mike Bradley (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep.).
After allowing Elizabethtown (11-5, 3-3 Commonwealth) to pull within two, Lycoming got back on track with a three-point basket by freshman guard Ihsaan Davis (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King Reg.), who finished the first half with seven points and four offensive rebounds coming off of the bench.
Lycoming built a seven-point lead at the three minute mark of the half, finding scorers up and down the roster.
With a 37-31 lead at the half, the Warriors generated 18 points from their bench as opposed to four for the Blue Jays. Will Kelly (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.) led Lycoming with eight points during the first 20 minutes, while pulling in four rebounds.
Kelly exploded on offense in the second half, putting up 20 points, going six-of-nine from the field and six-for-six from the free throw line. Lycoming honed its shooting in the second stanza, hitting 19 of 34 attempts from the floor, including six-for-nine from beyond the arc. Coming off the bench, Johnathan Williams (Bronx, N.Y./Rice) chipped in 13 second-half points.
Kelly finished the game with a game- and season-high 28 points, followed by Anthony and Bradley with 12 apiece. Bradley paced the Warriors on the glass, grabbing nine rebounds, including seven on defense. Jerald Williams did a nice job running the offense, dishing out 10 assists, and was solid on defense as he recorded six of the Warriors’ 16 steals.
As a team, Lycoming shot 44.4 (32-72) percent from the field, while going 12-of-24 from deep. Rebounding was a big component in the game, with the Warriors outrebounding the Blue Jays 45-40. Lycoming forced Elizabethtown into 24 turnovers.
The Warriors, currently in first-place in the Commonwealth, are on the road for their next game when they head to Alvernia University on Saturday, Jan. 23, for a crucial conference game. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
