GLENSIDE, Pa. --- The Lycoming College women’s basketball team improved to 2-3 in the Commonwealth Conference after defeating Arcadia University 65-58 in a road game on Saturday, Jan.16. Junior forward Kaitlyn Ober posted a season-high 20 points.
The Lady Warriors’ offense dominated throughout the contest, jumping out to an early 10-0 lead. Senior guard Allison Mock (State College, Pa./State College) capped the early run with a three-pointer.
After the Lady Knights pulled to within four points of the lead, Mock again canned a three-pointer to regain a seven-point lead. Following an Arcadia layup, fellow senior guard Jessica Zerbee (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg) knocked down a deep three to increase the advantage to 16-8, in favor of Lycoming.
Both teams hit a rough patch as the game went through a four-minute scoreless spell. Senior Lycoming guard Rebecca Leid (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) broke the skid at 6:41 with a layup after she grabbed the defensive rebound on the other end of the court.
Lycoming (4-11) regained a double-figure advantage following an Ober (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) layup at 2:09. Arcadia cut the advantage to nine, but another Ober layup rebuilt the lead to 11. She hit her third layup in two minutes with just 35 seconds remaining in the first half, sending Lycoming into the locker room with a 26-16 advantage.
With 14:55 left in the game, the Knights pulled within five points of the lead, 35-30. Leid was sent to the line following a layup and was able to convert the three-point play, keeping a 38-32 Warrior lead.
Lycoming got its biggest scare of the night after Arcadia was down just two points with 8:01 remaining in the contest. A pair of Ober free throws and a Mock three-pointer put Lycoming back up by seven, 50-43.
The Warriors found their groove down the stretch, hitting six shots in the final three minutes of the game to seal the win.
Three Lycoming players reached double figures in scoring. Ober combined her 20 points with 10 rebounds to record a double-double in the game. Mock tallied 16 points, going five-for-10 from beyond the arc. Leid chipped in 14 points and a team-high 11 rebounds, nine of which came on defense.
As a team, Lycoming forced Arcadia to turn the ball over 19 times, including six Lycoming steals. The Warriors hit 23 of their 58 shots, going 39.7 percent from the field.
Lycoming returns to Lamade Gymnasium on Wednesday, Jan. 20 when it hosts Commonwealth Conference foe Elizabethtown College. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
