GLENSIDE, Pa. --- The Lycoming College men’s basketball team hit 51.6 percent of its attempts from the field defeated Arcadia University 79-52 on Saturday, Jan. 16. The win extends Lycoming’s winning streak to six, and improves the Warriors to 7-0 on the road.
At 4-1 in the Commonwealth Conference, the team is tied for first with Albright College, who the Warriors defeated once this season.
Layups were the name of the game early on for the Warriors. After Arcadia scored the initial basket, James Oberlies (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep.) scored a layup to tie the score.
Will Kelly (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.) broke the tie with a mid-range jumper. Kelly increased Lycoming’s lead to 6-2 with a second layup followed by a Jerald Williams (Riverdale, Md./Bladensburg) roll in on a fast break started by his own steal. The Warriors (13-3) took a 10-2 lead after a fifth layup, this time from Ihsaan Davis (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King Regional).
Eric Anthony (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Central Catholic) hit the first of Lycoming’s six three-pointer at 7:37 in the first half to give the Warriors a 15-point lead. After a pair of Knight free throws, Anthony canned another three-pointer, putting Lycoming up 25-9, a 16-point advantage and the biggest lead of the half.
Lycoming took a 14-point advantage into the locker room at halftime.
The Warriors continued to shoot well, knocking down 18 of 34 second half field goal attempts, including four-of-eight from beyond the arc.
Just 20 seconds into the fresh half, Kelly knocked in a jumper to regain a 16-point lead, 38-22.
The Knights slowly crept back into the game, getting to within 10 with 14:15 left in the contest, jolting the Warriors offense awake.
Jerald Williams scored another fast break layup at the 14:05 mark that started a 16-5 Warrior run. After several turnovers by both teams, Davis hit a three-pointer to put Lycoming up 15. After another steal, Jerald Williams found Johnathan Williams (Bronx, N.Y./Rice) in transition for a layup. Davis hit a second shot from deep to give Lycoming a 51-31 lead.
Off the bench, Lycoming scored 26 points, including two on a jumper from Austin Smith (Lansdowne, Pa./Penn Wood) to put the Warriors up by 29, the biggest lead of the game, with 5:45 remaining
Individually, Davis’ 17 points were a game-high, followed by Kelly’s 12 points as the team’s second-best. Jerald Williams contributed 11 points while also grabbing five steals. Smith was the Warriors' rebounding leader, hauling in seven boards.
As a team, Lycoming dominated the glass, outrebounding Arcadia 39-27, including 24-18 in defensive rebounds. The Warriors forced 23 Knight turnovers, while grabbing 14 steals.
Lycoming returns to Lamade Gymnasium on Wednesday, Jan. 20 when it hosts Elizabethtown College in a Commonwealth Conference match up. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. following the women’s basketball game with the Blue Jays.
