Budd Whitehill Duals Headquarters
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- In its opening match, the Lycoming College wrestling team handled John Carroll University 31-12, picking up two pins along the way. The match was in the second round of the 2010 Budd Whitehill National Duals on Friday, Jan. 15.
After going up 12-3 with two Blue Streak forfeits followed by a Warrior loss at 141, Isaiah Britton (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.) picked up the Warriors’ first major decision of the Duals, defeating John Carroll’s Connor Suba, 13-4.
The Warriors (9-3) showed their skills at 157- and 165-pounds, with Zach Fredrick (West Chester, Pa./St. Mark’s) and No. 5 Chris Dahlheimer, respectively, each picking up first round pins. Frederick scored his fall in 1:27 while Dahlheimer earned his at 1:57.
At 174-pounds Kyle Crouthamel (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Freedom) rounded out the Warrior scoring with a pin in 1:57.
In Lycoming’s second match of the day, the Warriors squared off against Wilkes University, falling to the No. 16-ranked team 29-13.
The Warriors had a rough start against the Colonels, giving up six points after their 125-pounder suffered an injury and was forced to resign from the match. At 133-pounds, Wilkes scored an 18-0 technical fall and dropped a 5-3 decision at 141-pounds.
Down 14-0, Britton gave Lycoming a glimmer of hope, pinning his Colonel opponent in just 43 seconds, cutting the deficit nearly in half, 14-6.
Frederick battled at 157-pounds, falling in a 6-5 decision. Dahlheimer (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) scored a big major decision, winning his 165-pound match 13-0. The Warriors picked up an additional three points from 184-pounder Troy Hayre (Falls Church, Va./McLean).
Facing his toughest opponent of the day, 197-pound sophomore Russel Korbul (Asbury, N.J./North Hunterdon) used his raw strength and battled against the No. 9-ranked Zach Pizzaro. The two competitors fought hard the entire match, but Pizzaro escaped with a narrow 9-5 decision.
Lycoming’s next match will be against SUNY-Oswego, a team the Warriors defeated 28-9 a week ago. The teams face each other at 9 a.m. on mat two.
The semifinals of the tournament will feature No. 4 Ithaca and No. 16 Wilkes at 10:30 a.m. on mat one, as well as No. 7 College of New Jersey and No. 15 SUNY-Cortland on mat two, also at 10:30 a.m.
Arguably the match of the day was Messiah College against Hunter College. With the match tied at 15, Messiah’s Ethan Covalt scored a 1-0, heavyweight decision to boost the Falcons to an 18-15 lead.
Day one of the Budd Whitehill Duals was an exciting, fast-paced opener, with 58 wrestlers winning by fall, and another 11 technical falls.
