WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- Despite leading for over 18 minutes in the first half over No. 14 ranked Messiah College, the Lycoming College women’s basketball team fell 70-48 on Wednesday, Jan. 13. Senior guard Allison Mock lead all scorers with 14 points.
The Warriors (3-11, 1-3 Commownealth) were not intimidated by Messiah’s national ranking. Mock (State College, Pa./State College) opened the game by knocking down a three-pointer.
Lycoming stormed to a 16-4 lead, picking up another three-ball from Mock. Rebecca Leid (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) hit a two-pointer to put Lycoming up 8-3 followed by a layup from Rebecca Spencer to go up by seven. Senior guard Jessica Zerbee (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg) canned a three-pointer to increase the advantage to 14-3.
Following a Lycoming foul, Messiah hit the front end of its free throws to go down 14-4. On the Warriors’ next possession, Kaitlyn Ober (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) scored her first bucket of the night to give Lycoming a 16-4 lead.
Down big, the Falcons (13-1, 4-0 Commonwealth) slowly chipped away at the lead, eventually cutting into Lycoming’s advantage, 18-15. Lycoming rebuilt its advantage, going up 21-15 after Renee Freeden (Summit, N.J./Summit) was fouled after scoring a layup.
With 6:11 remaining in the first half, Ober rolled in a layup to give Lycoming a six-point, 25-19 lead. But the Falcons continued closing in, getting to within three with 4:36 on the first-half clock.
Messiah took its first lead of the contest at 2:03, ending the half up 28-25.
Mock wasted no time opening the second stanza, tying the contest at 28 with a deep three-pointer. The two teams traded jumpers for five minutes before the Messiah offense took control of the game, eventually building to a 23-point lead.
Mock hit four of her seven field goal attempts, all of which were three-point shots. Ober’s 11 points were tied for a game second-best. She was also the team leader in rebounds, hauling in eight, seven of which came on the defensive side of the ball.
As a team, the Warriors shot 81.8 percent from the free throw line, going nine-of-11. From the field, Lycoming shot 39.5 percent, hitting 17 of 43 attempts. 16 of Lycoming’s baskets were assisted.
The Lady Warriors’ next contest will be on the road when they travel to Glenside, Pa. for a Commonwealth Conference matchup with Arcadia University. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
