Volleyball splits tri-match with Penn College, Misericordia

--- The Lycoming College Volleyball team split a tri-match held at home, winning its first match 3-0 over Penn College and falling 3-2 in a long, grinding match to Misericordia University 3-2 on Saturday, Sept. 26.

The split hands Lycoming a 6-8 overall record, while Misericordia picked up a pair of victories and is now 11-5 and Penn College took a pair of losses and is 4-9 this season.

In the first game versus Penn College, the Lady Warriors pounded out 40 kills and had just 10 attacking errors in their 82 attempts. Junior outside hitter McKenna Warren (Elmira, N.Y./CMS Elmira) swung heavy all day, dropping in 11 kills against the Wildcats. Senior setter Abby Myers (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) handed out 31 assists in the three-game match. Sophomore libero Emily Abel kept the ball alive on 17 digs.

Against Misericordia, both teams came to play, needing all five games to decide a winner. Lycoming fell by a running score of 25-22, 14-25, 26-24, 22-25, 7-15. In that five-set duel, senior outside hitter Beth Machella (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) scored 10 kills, as did junior outside hitter Kelly Rose (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Bishop Hoban). Myers had 37 assists and Abel picked up 29 digs.

Lycoming returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 30 when they host Commonwealth foe Widener University. The match is set to take place at 7 p.m. in the Lamade Gymnasium.
