BELMONT, N.Y. - The Lycoming College women's volleyball team faced tough competition during the Houghton University Tri-Match, falling to Houghton 3-2 on Saturday, Sept. 26, and then to SUNY Morrisville 3-0 on Saturday, Sept. 30.
In the match against Houghton, the Warriors served 14 aces and won the fourth set 25-14, but ultimately lost the fifth set 16-14. The Warriors are now 3-11 overall, while Houghton improved to 5-6.
In the second set, Lycoming overcame a 4-3 deficit by scoring seven of the next eight points, including contributions from
Elizabeth Mayer,
Kamryn Skeith, Wenger, and Farnham. The Warriors sealed the set 25-20 with a strong finish, featuring three straight service aces from
Haley Balgavy.
The third set was a back-and-forth battle. The Warriors initially erased an 11-6 deficit with seven straight points, thanks to Skeith's serving. However, Houghton turned the tide, finishing the set 25-23 after a late push from the Warriors.
Lycoming dominated the fourth set, going ahead 6-2 with strong contributions from Skeith and an ace from Mayer. They extended their lead to 21-11 and closed out the set 25-14. However, in the deciding fifth set, the Warriors built a 9-3 lead but eventually fell 16-14, as Houghton scored the final two points.
Skeith led the Warriors with 15 points, including five service aces and 10 kills. Wenger added a team-high 12 kills and seven digs, while Morgan recorded 17 digs, nine kills, 10 assists, and three aces. Balgavy contributed a team-best 14 assists along with three aces and five digs.
In their match against SUNY Morrisville, the first set saw a strong push from the Warriors after falling behind 16-11, with Morgan's kill igniting a six-point run. However, Morrisville responded with six straight points to take the set 25-20.
Skeith was the standout for Lycoming in the match against Morrisville, leading with nine kills and five digs. Balgavy added eight assists and one service ace, while DeFreitas contributed a team-high nine digs, three assists, and one ace. Morgan chipped in with four kills, five assists, four digs, and one ace.
The Warriors are now 3-12 overall, while SUNY Morrisville improved to 12-2.
Up next, the Warriors will host Gallaudet on Friday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m. at Lamade Gym in Williamsport, Pa.
