WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- After recognizing its seniors, who played in their final regular season home game at Lycoming College, the Warriors topped Widener University 8-4, marking the first time the Lycoming squad has beaten the Pride at the Robert L. Shangraw Athletic Complex. Senior netminder Kyle Gilfoy had an outstanding game on April 18, making an astounding 26 saves.
The win secures not only a playoff berth, but a second place finish in the Middle Atlantic Conference and a first round bye with homefield for the second round. The Warriors are now 10-4 overall and 8-1 in the MAC while Widener slips to 6-8 on the year and 5-3 in the conference.
Lycoming started things off quickly, getting an early 2-0 lead. Dave Labagh found the net at 12:47 on an assist from Brad Schaeffer. Ed Williams and Steve Henz connected three minutes later at 9:54. Widener scored to cut the lead to 2-1. Lycoming went on a four goal run. Ricky DeNenno buried a fastbreak shot after Kevin Pfister carried the ball down from the defensive end and earned the assist. Dan Conkright created a Pride turnover and transitioned the ball to the offensive end. Seeing a lane, Conkright drove to the net and put the Warriors up 4-1.
Schaeffer tickled the twine with 4:46 remaining in the second quarter for the last goal of the first half. The Warriors opened up the third quarter with a goal from Shea Conway, assisted by Schaeffer. Widener scored with 8:19 left in the quarter before Nate Walter scored at 6:34 on an assist from Conway.
Two straight Pride goals narrowed the Warrior margin to 7-4 before another Walter goal sealed the 8-4 victory and home field advantage.
Lycoming’s man down defense was on its “A” game, holding Widener to just one man up goal on seven extra man opportunities. Gilfoy’s 26 saves tie him for the top spot in most saves in a single game. The other Warrior record came on April 27, 1999, also against Widener.
The Warriors are idle until their final game of the regular season on Saturday, April 25 when they travel to Purchase, N.Y. to face off against Manhattanville. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
