Lycoming lacrosse outlasts Etown 11-8, extend streak to eight

Nate WalterELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Dan Conkright sparked a six goal run for the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team as it defeated Middle Atlantic Conference foe Elizabethtown 11-8 on Tuesday, April 14. Conkright stripped a Blue Jay midfielder on a clear and transition the ball back to the offensive end.

The win improves Lycoming to 9-4 overall and 7-1 in the MAC, giving the 2009 team the longest win streak in the team’s history. Elizabethtown slips to 8-3 and 4-3 in the league.

It took some time for either team to get its offense rolling, but Lycoming was first on the board behind a goal by Ricky DeNenno at 8:44. The Jays found the net twice in a row before Ethan Payne struck two of his three goals back to back, giving Lycoming a 3-2 lead. Payne’s second goal was assisted by Steve Henz, Etown knotted the score at three all before DeNenno ended the first quarter with a goal at 2:44.

Ricky DeNennoThe second period started out with a tying goal at 14:38. Halfway through the period, Conkright snatched the momentum for the Warriors on his caused turnover. After passing it back to the offensive end, Nate Walter put his first goal of the day, assisted by Conway. DeNenno tallied the next two goals of the game at 7:01 and 5:51 to give the Lycoming squad a 7-4 lead. Both DeNenno goals were assisted, the first going to Ed Williams and the second helper from Payne. Walter and DeNenno wrapped up first half scoring for Lycoming at 1:38 on the Walter goal and DeNenno scored with just 41 ticks left on the clock. Payne had his second assist of the game on the Walter tally.

Both squads grinded through the third stanza before the Jays found the only goal of the quarter with 2:41 left, closing the gap to 10-5 Lycoming. Etown continued to close the gap to 10-8 before Ethan Payne scored his third and final goal of the game with 5:17 left in the game to seal the Lycoming victory 11-8.

CongratsIn the cage, Kyle Gilfoy had a brilliant day, making big time saves in big time situations. He finished the day with 11 and held the Warrior transition game go 16-18. Lycoming tallied two man up goals. At the faceoff square, Mike Doherty went 14-18 and picked up eight groundballs.

Lycoming is back on the field on Saturday, April 18 when it hosts longtime rival Widener University on Senior Day. Faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
