Stoner nets nine, Warriors pick up first victory

Andrew Stoner and Nate WalterCORNING, N.Y. --- Lycoming College sophomore Andrew Stoner stung Elmira College for nine goals as the men’s lacrosse team picked up its first victory of the season 13-9 over the Soaring Eagles. Stoner’s goals tie him for third in the record books for most goals in a single game.

With the win, Lycoming and head Coach Brian Anken picked up their first victory of the 2009 season, improving to 1-3 while Elmira falls to 0-2.

It took some time for the Warrior offense to capitalize before Stoner scored four goals on four shots, finding the net once in the first quarter and scoring three times in the second. Elmira took a 6-5 lead into halftime.

But the second half was all Lycoming, holding Elmira to just three goals the entire back half of the game, while the Warriors rattled off eight, including five from Stoner. Also scoring for Lycoming was Ethan Payne, Steve Henz, Nate Walter and Sam Forman. Henz assisted twice while Thomas Hartmann, Ed Williams, Brad Schaeffer, JB Campanella, Payne and Walter all recorded one helper.

Ethan Payne and Brad SchaefferUtilizing depth, every Lycoming field player saw time. In the net for the Warriors, Alan Antinarelli played a great game, making 20 saves and picked up six groundballs. Face offs were huge for the Warriors as they went 17-24, including individual efforts from Tim Clemente (8-12) and Mike Doherty (9-11). Doherty also recorded a team-high 10 groundballs.

Lycoming will be in action on Saturday, March 14 as it opens conference play against FDU-Florham in a 1 p.m. start at home on the turf at the Robert L. Shangraw Athletic Complex.
