ST. DAVID’S, Pa. --- Following four point efforts from both Shea Conway and Nate Walter, the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team held off a late charge by Eastern University on Saturday, March 28. The Warriors took home the victory 13-11 as Walter and Conway both scored three goals and tallied one assist each.
Mike Doherty picked up 17 groundballs, tying him for second most in a game with Mark Barnes, who picked 17 against Keuka on April 11, 2001. Doherty also went 20-of-26 at the faceoff square.
With the win, Lycoming is now 5-4 on the season, while improving to 3-1 in the Middle Atlantic Conference. Eastern is now 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
The Warrior offense started out on fire, stinging five goals in the first quarter to go up 5-0. Ricky DeNenno scored unassisted with 11:19 in the first period. Ed Williams got in on the action with 5:59 on the clock. Eleven seconds later, Doherty won his own faceoff and took the ball to the cage, putting Lycoming up 3-0. Ethan Payne took advantage of a Falcon penalty, scoring with 4:59 remaining in the quarter, with the assist going to Brad Schaeffer. Williams finished the scoring for the first as time expired, assisted by Dave Labagh.
Eastern cooled off the Warriors, holding them to just one goal in the second. DeNenno scored on an assist from Schaeffer with 9:45 on the clock. Four Falcon goals in the quarter narrowed the margin to a 6-4 Warrior advantage going in to halftime.
Walter and Conway tallied the first two goals of the third quarter to put Lycoming up 8-4. Conway’s came at 13:12 and was assisted by Payne, while Walter capitalized on another Falcon penalty catching the pass from Williams. Eastern outscored the Warriors 4-3 in the third stanza to cut the lead to 9-8 Lycoming.
Three straight Lycoming goals to open the final quarter put the Warriors up 12-8. Conway found net twice in the run, assisted by Walter and Dave Labagh. Payne was the third goal of the quarter for
Lycoming. Walter scored the final goal of the game for Lycoming, doing so on an assist from Williams at 10:14. Eastern’s Nick Mandia put the pressure on late in the game, scoring three of his six goals in the fourth, including the last goal of the afternoon with 45 seconds remaining on the clock.
As a team, Lycoming out groundballed the Falcons 51-32, picking up 29 in the second half. The Warriors stung five of their nine man-up chances, and cleared the ball 14 out of 18 attempts. In the cage, Kyle Gilfoy was forced to make 14 saves.
Lycoming will be back on the field Wednesday, April 1 when it hosts Messiah College in a MAC match-up. Faceoff is set for 4 p.m.
