CHESTER, Pa. --- The Lycoming College women’s softball team won its first conference game in almost two years in a 2-1 victory over Commonwealth foe Widener University on Saturday, March 21 in the first game of a double-header. Lycoming fell in second game 4-0.
The last time the Lady Warriors defeated a conference opponent was on March 31, 2007 when they won a 6-5 game over then Freedom Conference rival Scranton University.
With the win, the Lady Warriors improve to 5-9 overall and 1-3 in the Commonwealth. Widener is now 9-7 and 3-1 in conference action.
Lycoming jumped out early in the first game, with leadoff batter Manda Peck reaching first on a single. Two batters later, Shauna Starr blasted a homerun to score what proved to be the game winning run. Jessica Nabholz pitched very well, forcing 14 groundouts and five fly outs, while earning two strikeouts in the 23 batters faced.
Game two saw Widener come out swinging, scoring two runs in the first inning before the Warrior defense got to work. Shauna Starr pitched for the Warriors, with the defense helping put out 11 batters on grounders. Courtney Black had 11 putouts at first base and Peck earning four assists. The Warrior field play stranded four Pride baserunners.
The Lady Warriors will be back on the dirt on Wednesday, March 25 when they travel to Wilkes-Barre, Pa. to face King’s College. The first pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
