Lyco lax offense overpowers Alvernia 16-3 in first MAC victory

Nate WalterWILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- Offense was key in the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse victory over Alvernia 16-3 in the Warriors' first Middle Atlantic Conference win of the 2009 season on Saturday, March 21. Nate Walter and Josh Perrault each had two goals and two assists for eight points between them.

Ed Williams started things off on offense, rattling off the first two goals at 11:13 and 10:13 with Walter assisting the first goal. Alvernia cut the Warrior lead in half 2-1 scoring with 5:37 left to play in the first quarter. Following a timeout, the Warrior offense turned in to a juggernaut, putting in 14 straight goals. Williams started the streak with a man advantage at 1:49. Kevin Devenney wrapped up the first 15 minutes with a falling down goal with just 34 seconds left on a fastbreak.

Greg HaspertIn the second quarter, Brad Schaeffer and Perrault scored twice each while Walter and Dave Labagh each tallied a goal to send Lycoming into halftime up 11-1. Brian Duey was credited with the assist on Schaeffers goal.

The Crusader defense slowed down Lycoming in the third quarter, allowing just three goals, all of which came off the stick of Ethan Payne. Perrault had the assists on Payne’s first two goals. Walter and Ben Walker rounded out the Warrior scoring, both unassisted and Walker’s goal was the first of his NCAA career.

Lycoming used all three netminders in the tilt, with Kyle Gilfoy making two saves and getting the win. Alan Antinarelli made one save and did not allow a goal in the third quarter while Josh Danmayer made two saves for the finish in the fourth.

The Warriors dominated the faceoffs, going a season-best 17 wins and five losses. Mike Doherty was the faceoff leader, winning 13 and picking up 12 groundballs. Ethan McGill was the force on defense, causing four turnovers. Lycoming picked up 58 groundballs and cleared into the offense end 23 out 25 times.

Head Coach Brian Anken and the Warriors will be on the road on Wednesday, March 25 as they travel to King’s College for a MAC conference match-up. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m.
