Men's lacrosse defends Rumble on the River title

Nate WalterWILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- The Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team defended the Rumble on the River title in the local rivalry between Lycoming and Susquehanna University on Wednesday, March 18. Last season, the Warriors defeated the Crusaders 17-2 and this year Lycoming overpowered 18-6.

The win improves Lycoming to 2-4 overall and it was the Warriors final non-conference game of the season. Susquehanna falls to 3-3 on the year.

The starting attack line of Brad Schaeffer, Shea Conway and Nate Walter accounted for half of the Warriors total points, with each picking up five. Schaeffer had one goal and four assists, Conway had a season-high two goals and three assists and Walter wrapped up with three goals and two assists. As a team, Lycoming assisted on 12 of 18 goals.

Ed Williams and Ethan Payne were the first two Warriors on the board, with Schaeffer assisting on both goals at 7:55 and 5:16 respectively.  Andrew Stoner struck next to boost the lead to 3-0 on an assist from Steve Henz. Williams rounded out the first quarter with a goal at 3:55, putting Lycoming up 4-0.

Shea ConwayWalter, Stoner and Conway all stung goals, with Conway assisting the Walter goal. Dave Labagh found the net with 6:22 remaining in the half, giving Walter his first assist of the day. Mike Doherty gave the Warriors a 9-2 advantage as he won his own faceoff and came down and scored. Ricky DeNenno gave Conway his second helper of the day, putting the ball in the top corner with 2:38, sending Lycoming into half up 10-3.

Five straight goals by the Warriors to start the third quarter made the lead an insurmountable 15-3. Scoring on the run were Schaeffer, Walter twice, Williams and Dan Conkright, who was the benefactor of a forced turnover by Kevin Moris. Conway, Payne and Stoner finished the goal scoring for the day in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Lycoming caused 19 turnovers, with Moris and Devenney each forcing four. The Warriors out groundballed Susquehanna 50-32, including ten from Mike Doherty, who also won 14 faceoffs. The Warriors had a great day clearing the ball, getting it to the offense 22 out of 23 attempts.

Lycoming will be back in conference play on Saturday, March 21 at 12 p.m. (noon) when it hosts Middle Atlantic newcomer Alvernia University.
