CHESTER, Pa. --- With just one player in double figures in scoring, the Lycoming College men’s basketball team was unable to overcome a fast, second half offense in Widener University on the road in Chester on Saturday, Feb. 14. Greg Sye led Lycoming with 10 points in the 70-55 loss.
With the loss, the Warriors are 11-11 overall and 4-6 in the Commonwealth Conference. Widener improved to 18-5 and 8-2.
The game started well for Lycoming, which jumped out to a five point, 9-4 lead at 15:29 when Will Kelly drove the lane and scored a layup. The Pride’s Jamarr Johnson evened the score at nine after he too scored a layup. The Warriors wrested the lead back as Brandon Wilkinson stroked a three-pointer at 12:24.
Back-to-back layups by Lycoming’s Austin Smith gave Lycoming a 20-12 advantage with 10:34 left in the first half. The Warriors took a 29-24 lead into halftime as Mike Bradley hit the front end of a one-and-one.
The second half proved to be the downfall of Lycoming. Widener chipped away at the lead and then take control of the game. Matt Sosna took advantage of a Warrior turnover and scored a fast break layup, giving Widener a 30-29 lead.
From there, the Pride capitalized on several Warrior turnovers, eventually building a 12-point lead as Nyere Miller hit a three ball at 12:15. Widener took its biggest lead of the game (18) at 3:14 on a pair of free throws by Bobby Edmunds
Will Kelly was second for Lycoming in scoring with nine, and tied with Sye in rebounds with five. Jemayne Nowlin contributed eight points and four rebounds. The Warriors out-rebounded Widener 38 to 31, but 23 Lycoming turnovers led to 30 points on the board for Widener.
The Warriors will be back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 17 when they host Messiah College in their final home game of the 2008-09 season. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
