SELINSGROVE, Pa. --- Despite freshman Rachel Scheller putting up 14 points, the Lycoming College women’s basketball team fell to local rival Susquehanna University 79-62 on Monday, Dec. 7. Scheller hit six of her eight shots in the game.
Lycoming slips to 1-7 overall while the Lady Crusaders improve to 4-3 on the season.
After starting the game down 5-0 in the first three minutes, the Lady Warriors evened the score after a Scheller (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) three pointer, followed by a pair of free throws from Rebecca Leid (Denver, Pa./Cocalico). Susquehanna jumped out to a 10-point lead, 20-10, with 13:01 left in the first half.
Scheller knocked down her second three-pointer of the first half to cut the deficit to seven. Another deep shot, this time from fellow freshman Leeann Randall (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) pulled Lycoming to down 20-16.
With the score at 24-17 after an Erin Connaghan (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) free throw, senior guard Allison Mock (State College, Pa./State College) continued Lycoming’s hot streak from beyond the arc, hitting a third three-pointer to get Lycoming within four, 24-20.
On Lycoming’s next defensive stand, Mock came down with a rebound, passing the ball to Kaitlyn Ober (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) for a layup to drop the Crusader lead to two. Following a Susquehanna jumper, Ober again pulled Lycoming to within two with another layup.
Several layups and jumpers from the Crusaders sent the teams into halftime with a 38-31 score in favor of Susquehanna.
The Lady Warrior offense opened the second half strong, connecting on three of its first four shots, with Leid and Connaghan each hitting a jump shot, and Amanda Hart (State College, Pa./State College) pulling Lycoming to within one point of the lead, 38-37, on a layup.
The Crusaders hit a three-pointer to go up four, but Leid drove the lane and scored a layup to close the gap, 41-39. After Randall hit a three-pointer at 9:20 in the second half, Susquehanna’s offense proved to be too strong for Lycoming, carrying a double-digit lead the rest of the game.
Scheller’s 14 points were a team-high, followed by Ober with nine and Meagan Pittius (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) with eight. Connaghan and Ober each grabbed five rebounds, both recording four on defense. Scheller also tallied three steals.
Lycoming returns to Lamade Gymnasium on Thursday, Dec. 10 when it hosts King’s College in a Middle Atlantic Conferences cross-over match. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
