Women's basketball falls in defensive battle 49-42

CHESTER, Pa. --- In a game with a combined 17 steals and eight blocks, the Lycoming College women’s basketball team fell in a defensive battle to Widener University 49-42 on Saturday, Dec. 5. Senior forward Rebecca Leid tallied four of the Warriors’ 10 steals.Lycoming slips to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the Commonwealth Conference as the Pride improve to 5-2 on the season and 2-0 in the league.

The game started at a slow pace, with Lycoming’s Alicia Engler (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.) putting Lycoming up 4-2 at 16:13 with a layup. The Pride rallied and built a 20-4 lead with 9:24 remaining in the first half.

But Lycoming’s Amanda Hart (State College, Pa./State College) picked three points after scoring a layup and converting a free throw after being fouled. Leid (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) further cut the Widener lead to 11 after putting in a layup on a pass from Erin Connaghan (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt).

Senior guard Jessica Zerbee (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg) pulled the Warriors to within five points, 24-19, after hitting a three-pointer on a pass from freshman Leeann Randall (Audubon, Pa./Methacton). Kaitlyn Ober (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) hit the front end of a one-and-one free throw situation to send Lycoming into halftime down just four, 24-20.

Again the second half started slowly, with neither team able to put up points until Widener scored a layup at 17:58. After a three and a half minute scoring drought, the Pride rebuilt their lead to 15, 35-20 with 12:22 left in the game.

With 9:06 on the clock, the Warriors were down 41-27 before Zerbee hit a three to close the gap to 11 and start a late surge. Engler also knocked down a three-pointer to pull Lycoming within eight. Hart narrowed the lead with a layup, making the score 42-35.

Another Engler three-pointer on a pass from Zerbee closed the difference to just five, 47-42. But the Lady Warriors could not complete the rally, falling 49-42.

Zerbee was Lycoming’s only scorer in double-digits, posting 12 points while handing out four assists. Leid chipped in nine points and a game-high four steals. Connaghan was the game’s second-leading rebounder, pulling in nine.

Lycoming is back on the road Monday, Dec. 7 when they travel to local rival Susquehanna University. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
