Men's hoops surges past Widener 91-85

--- After being down 16 points to start the second half, the Lycoming College men’s basketball team surged past Widener University 91-85 on Saturday, Dec. 5. Senior guard Eric Anthony exploded for 31 points.

Lycoming improves to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in the Commonwealth Conference while Widener falls to 5-2 on the season and 1-1 in the conference.

Anthony (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Central Catholic) sparked the run at the 16:16 mark after knocking down a three-pointer on a pass from freshman Jerald Williams (Riverdale, Md./Bladensburg). Anthony had a hand in the next Lycoming basket after finding James Oberlies (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep.) under the rim for a layup.

On the next trip down the court, Williams again set up Anthony with a three-pointer, cutting the Widener lead to 51-43. Widener picked up two points on its next possession, but Austin Smith (Lansdowne, Pa./Penn Wood) cut the deficit to eight after scoring a tip-in on an Oberlies jumper.

After a missed jumper by the Pride, Williams carried the ball down the court and scored a layup to pull Lycoming within six. A pair of Anthony free throws cut the lead to just four, 53-49. With 12:50 on the clock, Ihsaan Davis (Jamaica, N.Y./Chris the King Regional) hit a jumper to get the Warriors to a one-possession gap, 53-51.

The Pride were able to maintain the lead for another four minutes before Will Kelly (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.) knocked down a three-pointer to give the Warriors their first lead of game.

Once Lycoming earned the lead, it never looked back.

Kelly put the Warriors up by nine with 7:47 in the game with a deep three-pointer on a pass from Oberlies. Widener mounted a rally of its own, getting to within four points of the lead at 6:11, 69-65.

Lycoming regained its nine-point lead with 2:32 remaining on the clock with a pair of free throws from Williams to seal the victory.

Anthony finished the game with 31 points and seven rebounds. He made 14 trips to the free throw line, hitting 13 of his attempts. Kelly tallied 19 points, shooting 60.0 percent from the field while also grabbing nine rebounds. Johnathan Williams (Bronx, N.Y./Rice) capped his day with 11 points. Davis scored 10 points with five rebounds.

Lycoming returns to Lamade Gymnasium on Tuesday, Dec. 8 when it hosts Juniata College. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
