WINCHESTER, Va. --- Four different Lycoming College men’s basketball players reached double digits in scoring as the Warriors defeated Shenandoah University 78-67 in a road game on Wednesday, Dec. 30. Junior Will Kelly paced Lycoming with 17 points.
Senior guard Eric Anthony set the pace for the Warriors (9-2) early in the contest after knocking down a three-pointer less than a minute into the game. After the Hornets took a one point lead, James Oberlies (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep.) canned a jumper to put Lycoming up one. Sophomore center Mike Bradley connected on a jumper in the paint to put Lycoming up by three.
Shenandoah (3-9) cut Lycoming’s lead to one, but again it was Bradley who increased the Warrior margin to three. The Hornets continued to battle, once more pulling within one point before Lycoming’s John Caggiano (Mt. Arlington, N.J./Roxbury) hit a jumper. Shenandoah tied the game for a second time at 12:45 in the first half with a three-pointer.
Kelly (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.) broke the tie to put the Warriors up 14-12, but Shenandoah tied the game for a third time. Junior Sebastain Sabella (Bayside, N.Y./Episcopal) gave the Warriors a two-point lead with a jump shot, and once the Warriors gained the lead, they never gave it up. Caggiano put Lycoming up six, 20-14, with 8:47 left in the first half followed by a Kelly three-pointer to go up nine.
Freshman guard Ihsaan Davis (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King Regional) gave the Warriors a 26-17 advantage with 5:48 on the clock with a deep three-pointer. The Hornets' offense picked up its pace, getting to within five points of the lead before Lycoming’s offense answered and gained a 10-point margin.
Shenandoah nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer, sending the teams into the locker rooms 34-28 in favor of Lycoming.
Lycoming opened the second half with a 13-5 run in the first four minutes. Bradley hit a pair of free throws and scored a layup for the first four points of the run. After a Shenandoah three-pointer, Bradley scored another layup followed by an Anthony layup in transition. Kelly hit a pair of free throws in the run, with Davis chipping in a free throw and Jerald Williams (Riverdale, Md./Bladensburg) hitting a jumper at the top of the key.
Midway through the second half, the Hornets pulled to within just three points, 48-45. The Warriors scored seven points in two minutes to regain a 10-point advantage. Kelly hit a three-pointer with Johnathan Williams (Bronx, N.Y./Rice) scoring a jumper and a layup, both in fast break situations.
With 5:09 left in the game, Kelly hit another three, putting Lycoming up by 12, but the Hornets scrambled and pulled to within three, 65-62 with 2:07 remaining. Bradley scored an old-fashioned three-point play after being fouled on a layup and converting the free throw. Four straight free throws from Kelly and Jerald Williams put the Warriors up by 10 with less than a minute on the clock.
Another four straight free throws from Kelly and Anthony sealed the victory for the Warriors.
Kelly’s 17 points tied for a game-high, with Bradley chipping in 16 points and Anthony putting up 14. Davis’ 10 points rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Warriors. Kelly had the team-high in rebounds, grabbing 12, 11 of which were on defense.
As a team, Lycoming scored 32 of its points in the paint, and 18 Warrior points came on 10 offensive rebounds. Lycoming shot 46.3 (25-of-54) from the field, including 12-of-22 in the second half.
Lycoming is idle until Monday, Jan. 4 when it travels to New Jersey City University. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
