WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- Behind 21 points from Lycoming College freshman Ihsaan Davis, the men’s basketball team used a high-powered offense to defeat Dickinson College 89-74 on Sunday, Dec. 20. The Warriors also had 17 points from Sebastian Sabella.
The win improves Lycoming to 8-2 on the season, while Dickinson falls to 1-8 overall.
Eric Anthony (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Central Catholic) canned a mid-range jump shot on a Davis pass to give Lycoming a 9-6 lead, but the Red Devils evened the score at 10 apiece midway through the first half. Davis (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King Regional) hit a three-pointer to regain the lead after Johnathan Williams (Bronx, N.Y./Rice) found him at the top of the arc.
Once Lycoming had the lead, the offensive juggernaut began to roll, building to a 15-point lead with 5:06 remaining in the first half. The Warriors utilized 19 steals to score 37 of their points on Dickinson turnovers. Jerald Williams (Riverdale, Md./Bladensburg) led Lycoming in steals with six.
After Dickinson cut the Warriors’ lead to seven, Mike Bradley (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep.) sparked an 11-0 run after scoring a transition layup on an assist from James Oberlies (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep.), giving the Warriors a 32-23 lead. Sabella (Bayside, N.Y./Episcopal) came up with a steal and scored an unassisted layup followed by an Oberlies bucket and a pair of free throws to build the lead to 15.
With less than a minute on clock, Sabella scored another layup to put Lycoming up 40-23 before Anthony sealed the first half with a three-pointer with just six seconds left to send the Warriors to the locker room with a 43-23 lead.
In the second half, Lycoming’s offense continued to roll. After the Red Devils cut the lead to 10, the smallest margin of the second half, the Warriors exploded on offense, eventually leading the game by 25 with 8:40 left, 72-47. From that point on, the Lycoming lead dipped below 20 just once at 5:23 on a Dickinson layup.
Ethan Lee (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) capped the high-powered offense with a deep three-ball from John Caggiano (Mt. Arlington, N.J./Roxbury) in the final minute of the game.
The Lycoming offense had a sharp-shooter day, hitting 53.1 percent of its shots in the first half, including five-for-nine from beyond the arc. The three-point shooting was led by Davis, who hit four of his five three-pointers, finishing the day seven-for-nine from the field. Sabella shot 70 percent from the floor, knocking down seven of his 10 shots. Austin Smith (Lansdowne, Pa./Penn Wood) led the game with seven rebounds while also recording one block.
Lycoming is on the road for its next game when it travels to Shenandoah University on Wednesday, Dec. 30. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
