WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- In a Middle Atlantic Conferences crossover game, the Lycoming College men’s basketball team fell to Wilkes University 82-70 on Saturday, Dec. 12. Junior forward Will Kelly led all Warriors with 23 points.
The loss was just the second of the season for Lycoming, dropping them to 7-2 overall, while Wilkes improves to 5-3 on the season.
The Warriors took their only lead of the game with five minutes remaining in the first half after Mike Bradley (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep.) scored an old-fashioned three-point play with a layup and free throw after being fouled, putting Lycoming up by a narrow 27-25 margin.
Wilkes’ Chris DeRojas, who posted 37 points in the game, hit back-to-back three pointers to regain the lead, which the Colonels held onto for the rest of the contest. Wilkes held a slight advantage through the remaining minutes of the first half, sending the teams into the locker rooms 41-32.
Kelly (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock)opened the second half with a jumper to cut the margin to seven, with James Oberlies (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep.) finding Kelly with the pass. Freshman Jerald Williams (Riverdale, Md./Bladensburg)was sent to the free throw line, hitting the second of his two shots, getting Lycoming within six points of the lead.
With 11 minutes left in the game, the Warriors found themselves down 12, but a three-pointer from Kelly pulled Lycoming to down nine, 60-51. Four minutes later, Kelly hit another deep three to get Lycoming down only six points. A Bradley layup on the next possession pulled the team to within four, 64-60.
Oberlies grabbed a defensive rebound, finding Williams down court in transition. Williams connected with Eric Anthony (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Central Catholic) on a jumper to get Lycoming to within a possession of the lead, 64-62.
But the Colonels added to their lead for the victory.
Kelly finished the game with a team-high 23 points, while also grabbing a second-best eight rebounds. Bradley posted a double-double, putting up 11 points and hauling in a game-high 10 rebounds. Anthony chipped in nine points, in addition to five assists.
Lycoming finishes a three-game home stand on Saturday, Dec. 20 when it hosts Dickinson College. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
