WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- The Lycoming College men’s basketball team won its fifth-straight game by double-digits after defeating Susquehanna University 88-77 on Sunday, Nov. 29. Four Warriors reached double-figures in scoring.
The win extends Lycoming’s record to 5-0, while the Crusaders slip to 2-2 on the year.
Susquehanna took its only lead of the game 30 seconds in after a three pointer. Back-to-back layups by Mike Bradley and Will Kelly gave the Warriors an early 4-3 advantage.
The Warriors took the lead and never looked back after Susquehanna hit a free throw to tie the game at four. Jerald Williams (Riverdale, Md./Bladensburg) gave Lycoming a 6-4 lead after rolling in a layup.
Williams and James Oberlies (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep.) took turns scoring layups to give Lycoming a six-point lead. Freshman Johnathan Williams (Bronx, N.Y./Rice) continued the offensive dominance, hitting a jumper at 15:26 to put the Warriors up 14-6.
Kelly knocked down one of Lycoming’s six three-pointers to take an 11-point advantage. With 11:39 on the clock, Johnathan Williams knocked down another deep three-pointer followed by an Oblerlies layup to put Lycoming up 17.
Eric Anthony (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Central Catholic) hit back-to-back three-pointers to give the Warriors their biggest lead of the game at 23, with 6:12 left in the first half. After the Crusaders hit a jumper, John Caggiano (Mt. Arlington, N.J./Roxbury) rebuilt the 23-point lead on a jump shot. Lycoming took a 44-25 lead into the halftime break.
In the opening moments of the second half, Kelly (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.) scored an early layup as Lycoming went up 46-25. Susquehanna slowly chipped away at Lycoming’s lead, eventually getting to within 12 at 5:29 of the half.
Jerald Williams helped regain a large lead with 4:08 remaining in the game after driving the lane and hitting a fast break layup and drawing a foul, scoring the free throw to get the Warriors to 78-60.
Anthony hit a pair of free throws to seal the 88-77 win with 51 seconds left on the clock.
The Warriors offense was led by Anthony, who posted 23 points and six assists. Jerald Williams put up 18 points and a game-high seven assists. Kelly chipped in 15 points and a team-high five rebounds. Caggiano also pulled down five boards while Johnathan Williams had 14 points and four rebounds.
Lycoming went six-for-12 from beyond the arc, and shot 53.2 percent from the field. The Warriors defense was led by Kelly, who grabbed three steals and Bradley (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep.) had two of Lycoming’s five blocks.
Head coach Guy Rancourt and the Warriors open their Commonwealth Conference schedule on Wednesday, Dec. 2 when Lebanon Valley College comes to Williamsport. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
