Men's basketball advances to finals after downing Franciscan 84-53

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.
--- The Lycoming College men's basketball team advances to the finals of the 2009 Lycoming College Tip-off tournament after defeating Franciscan University of Steubenville 84-53 on Saturday, Nov. 21. 

The Warriors improve to 3-0 on the year while the Barons slip to 0-2.
 
The action started off slowly; with no points scored until Franciscan took a 2-0 lead at 18:27. Mike Bradley (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep.) evened the score with a dunk at 18:16. The game went into a two and a half minute scoreless-drought. A pair of Baron free-throws gave Franciscan a slight 4-2 edge.
 
Again it was Bradley who evened things up after hitting two free throws. He gave Lycoming its first lead of the night after converting a pass from James Oberlies (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep.).
 
Franciscan connected on a layup and a three pointer to regain the lead 9-6. The Baron’s built up to a five-point lead with 12:55 remaining in the first half.
 
Senior guard Eric Anthony (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Central Catholic) knocked in a pair of free-throws to break a 14-14 tie. Jerald Williams (Riverdale, Md./Bladensburg) boosted the Warriors to a three-point lead after scoring a fast break layup, sparking the Lycoming offense.
 
Playing in a run-and-gun style, Lycoming cracked the game open and eventually built a 14-point lead, 37-23, on a Will Kelly (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.) three pointer with 2:31 in the half. After a pair of free throws from Jerald Williams, Lycoming took a 15-point lead in to the locker room.

The Barons battled back early in the second half, cutting Lycoming’s lead to just four at 16:24 in the second period. Oberlies took the offense on his shoulders, rebuilding the Warrior lead to seven after a mid-range jumper.
 
Lycoming’s high-speed offense continued to roll, getting to a 20-point lead after Austin Smith (Lansdowne, Pa./Penn Wood) hit a jump shot at the top of the key.

Freshman Johnathan Williams (Bronx, N.Y./Rice)capped the Lycoming victory with a pair of free throws with 21 seconds left in the game.

In the game, the Warriors were led by Bradley with 22 points and eight rebounds. Will Kelly posted 12 points and seven boards while Johnathan Williams tallied 13 points and six boards.
 
The Warriors draw the College of Staten Island in the championship game after the Dolphins defeated PSU-Berks 69-53. The consolation game will be between PSU-Berks and Franciscan, beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 22. The Championship game will be at 4 p.m.
 
In the second game of the tournament, Staten Island’s Jordan Young tallied a double-double after scoring 22 points and pulling 11 rebounds. Teammate Ryan Hennessey scored 19 points and had six rebounds and four assists in the victory.
