Lady Warrior hoops opens season with 91-56 win

The Lycoming College women’s basketball team won its third straight season opener 91-56 over cross-town rival Pennsylvania College of Technology on Tuesday, Nov. 17. The Lady Warriors never trailed in the contest.
 
Lycoming opens its season at 1-0 overall, while Penn College falls to 1-2 on the season.
 
The action started off slowly until Jessica Zerbee (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg) knocked down a three-pointer for the first bucket at 18:36. Freshman Leeann Randall (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) picked up her first career points on another three, giving Lycoming a 6-0 lead. Zerbee and Randall assisted one another’s shots.
 
Zerbee broke another scoring drought, this one more than three minutes long, with yet another three-pointer, give the Warriors a 9-0 advantage.
 
Penn College broke onto the scoreboard at the 13:50 mark of the first half, eventually narrowing the gap to 9-6 after two free throw shots from Jessica Strasser. The Wildcats knotted the game at nine apiece with a Strasser three.
 
Good transitional basketball was the key to Lycoming’s success, with 18 points coming in fast break situations. The Warriors also capitalized on nearly every Penn College turnover, picking up 42 points on turnovers.

The Warriors broke open the scoring late in the first half, taking a 38-21 lead into the locker room, with the biggest lead of the half at 19 with 18 seconds on the clock.
 
Opening the second half, Randall and Alicia Engler (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.) teamed up, each knocking down threes to help Lycoming gain a 29 point lead, 52-23. Zerbee was key in the run, finishing the game with eight steals.
 
Lycoming’s offense continued to roll, building up a to a 40 point lead. Erin Connaghan (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) gave the Warriors a 67-27 lead with 12:49 remaining in the game. Freshman Rachel Scheller (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) boosted Lycoming to its biggest lead of the night at 41 with 9:02 on the clock.
 
Four Lady Warriors found double digits in the game. Zerbee and Engler each chipped in 16 points, as well as four rebounds. Randall finished her first collegiate game with 14 points and two rebounds. Junior Kaitlyn Ober (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) posted 12 points and three rebounds.
 
Leid was the top rebounder for the Warriors, grabbing four boards, but Penn College’s Kelsey Mack had the game high with 11.
 
The Lady Warriors return to the hardwood on Saturday, Nov. 21 when they travel to the DeSales University Tournament. They face off against Wesley College at 8 p.m.
