BRADFORD, Pa. --- Down 16 points at the 6:29 mark of the second half, the Lycoming College men’s basketball team rallied to defeat Pitt-Bradford 87-81 in the season opener on Sunday, Nov. 15 on the road.
Lycoming opens the year with a 1-0 record while Bradford falls to 0-1.
With 6:29 on the clock, senior guard Eric Anthony (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Central Catholic) hit two free throws to cut the 16-point lead down to 14. On Bradford’s next possession, Anthony picked up a steal and was again sent to the charity stripe, knocking down another two free throws and cutting the lead to 76-65.
The Warrior offense was sparked after a Bradford player was given a technical foul. Head coach Guy Rancourt opted to send Anthony to the line to take the shots. After getting the ball back, Anthony hit a jumper to close the gap 77-69.
On the Panthers’ next two possessions, James Oberlies (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep.) came up with two steals to keep the Warriors within striking distance. Freshman Johnathan Williams (Bronx, N.Y./Rice) pulled the Warriors to within three after hitting a deep three-pointer, moving the score to 77-74 with 5:22 on the clock.
With 3:23 on the clock, Johnathan Williams scored a layup, tying the game at 78 apiece. The Warriors took their first lead since the 6:45 mark in the first half after Williams rolled in a second layup, putting Lycoming up 81-78.
Key free throws from freshman Jerald Williams (Riverdale, Md./Bladensburg) sealed the victory for Lycoming, 87-81.
Three Warriors recorded double digits in scoring, led by Anthony, who scored 29 after going eight of 14 from the field and 12 of 14 from the line. He also handed out four assists. Johnathan Williams picked up 17 points in his first collegiate contest. Mike Bradley (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep.) had a 14-point day and pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
As a team, Lycoming had trouble at the line, going 27 of 46 for the game. The Warriors had a solid day from the field, shooting 41.2 percent, going 28 of 68.
Lycoming is on the road for the second straight game when it travels to Penn State Hazleton on Wednesday, Nov. 18 for a 7:30 p.m. tip off.
