WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Lycoming College wrestling team split its matches on the opening day of the Budd Whitehill National Duals, defeating Springfield and falling against #16 Wilkes. Competition continues all day Saturday in the 21st annual tournament.
Head coach Roger Crebs anticipated a close match with Springfield when he saw the pairings come out earlier this week. His prediction held true, as the Warriors went on to win 18-13 in the closest score of the first round matches.
Jimmy Couturiaux opened things for Lycoming with a 3-2 decision over Jesse Sgaglione at 125 pounds. Andrew Lewis followed that up with a 1-0 decision over Casey Leslie at 133 and Tom Barger earned a 7-2 decision over Ryan McGilvray at 141 to put the Warriors up 9-0. Mike Maurer added to the lead with an 11-4 decision over Oscar Orellana at 149, but Springfield battled back with wins at 157 and an upset win at 165. Troy Hayre put Lycoming back on track in thrilling fashion. With his match tied after regulation, he took control in overtime and went on to win 5-1 against Brandon Sundwall at 174. The Pride claimed the 184 pound bout, but Bryan Kopesky sealed the Lycoming win with a 10-5 win against Bill Schady at 197.
In the second match of the day, the No.16 ranked Wilkes Colonels defeated the Warriors 20-15. Wilkes jumped out to a 6-0 lead with wins at 125 and 133. The Warriors recovered with wins by Barger at 141 (10-8 over Anthony Dattolo) and Maurer at 149 (4-1 over Erik Smith). The teams traded matches with the Colonels claiming 157 and Lycoming’s Chris Dahlheimer earning a 5-1 decision over Richard Sprarks at 165. With the score tied at 9-9, Wilkes reeled off three straight wins, earning two decisions and a technical fall to put the match out of reach. Richard Ausem was credited with a forfeit win for Lycoming to close out the match.
