Lady Warriors winning streak snapped in conference opener

Erin ConnaghanWILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Lycoming College’s women’s basketball team saw a seven-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday night, Jan. 7, in its Commonwealth Conference opener against Elizabethtown.

Lycoming (8-1, 0-1 Commonwealth) opened the game with eight unanswered points in the first 2:32 of play and carried a seven-point lead, 19-12, with just under 13 minutes to play.

Elizabethtown clawed back into the game with a seven point run, tying the game at 19-19 with 10:42 left in the first half. The Blue Jays took their first lead of the game with 8:52 to play and pushed out to a six point lead, 34-28, with 2:32 left in the half before closing with a 10-6 push to take a 44-34 lead into the intermission.

Lycoming could not recover from the halftime deficit and Elizabethtown pushed its lead out to 17 points, 58-41, with 12:04 left in the game. The Lady Warriors got back to within seven points, but could come no closer as the Blue Jays closed out the 69-59 win.

Elizabethtown dominated on the glass, out-rebounding the Lady Warriors 58-39 in the game. The Blue Jays finished with a 37.9 shooting percentage and 22 turnovers to Lycoming’s 31.9 percent from the field and 13 turnovers.

Andrea Cooper (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) scored all 13 of her team-high points in the first half and finished with a team high nine rebounds. She was joined by Allison Mock (State College, Pa.) with 13 points as well. Alicia Engler (Williamsport, Pa.) and Kaitlyn Ober (Lititz, Pa.) each finished with nine points.

Elizabethtown was led by Jenn Mantague and Megan Quinn, who each finished with double-doubles. Montague put up 20 points and 20 rebounds while Quinn finished with a game-high 21 points and 12 rebounds.

The loss drops the Lady Warriors to 8-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play. It also marks the 10th-straight Commonwealth loss for the women, with their last conference win coming against Elizabethtown on Jan. 22, 2008. The Blue Jays improve to 7-4 overall and 1-0 in league play.

Lycoming will host Widener in a Commonwealth matchup on Sunday, Jan. 11, at Lamade Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be followed by the men’s game with Widener at 3 p.m.
