Mock and Zerbee key Lady Warrior win over Widener

Jessica ZerbeeWILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Allison Mock and Jessica Zerbee combined for 13 points in the last 1:25 of the game as the Lycoming women’s basketball team earned a 69-62 victory over Widener on Saturday, Jan. 11, in a Commonwealth Conference game at Lamade Gymnasium.

Trailing by two with 1:25 left in the game, Mock (State College, Pa.) connected on a deep three-pointer from the left wing off an assist from Zerbee (Duncansville, Pa.) to put the Lady Warriors up 59-58. Zerbee hit four-straight free throws and Mock finished with six-straight free throws to close out the game and secure the seven-point win.

The win marked the first conference win for the Lady Warriors since Jan. 22, 2008 and snaps a 10-game conference losing streak.

Lycoming took the lead with 14:29 left in the first half and held on to carry a 33-30 lead into halftime and pushed the lead up to as much as seven at the start of the second half. Widener clawed back and took its first lead of the second half with just over 10 minutes to play. After six lead changes, the Pride held a two-point lead, 58-56, with 3:07 left in the game. Neither team could convert until Mock’s three-pointer broke the drought and set up the finish.

Zerbee had a breakout game, finishing with season highs in points (21) and rebounds (8) while posting perfect numbers from behind the three-point arc (4-of-4) and the charity stripe (5-of-5). Mock finished with 14 points and was joined by Jessica Nabholz (Cressona, Pa.) with a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Andrea Cooper (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) finished with five points to bring her career total to 987 points, 13 shy of the 1,000-point milestone.

Widener was led by Casey Pritz’s double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds. Barbara Fleming added 17 points.

The Lady Warriors shot 40.4 percent (21-52) from the field to Widener’s 35.4 percent (23-65). The Pride held a 46-40 rebounding advantage in a game that saw five ties, 15 lead changes and 50 total turnovers.

With the win, Lycoming improves to 9-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Widener drops to 9-5 overall and 1-1 in league play.

The Lady Warriors will travel to Lebanon Valley on Wednesday, Jan. 14, for a 6 p.m. Commonwealth contest. That game with be followed by the men’s game at 8 p.m.
