Lady Warriors off to best start since 1999 season

Jessica NabholzWILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Lycoming College women’s basketball team improved to 5-1 this season with a 68-61 win against Delaware Valley on Saturday, Dec. 6, at Lamade Gymnasium. The 5-1 start is the best for the Lady Warriors since the opening of the 1999-2000 season.

Each team put together small runs throughout the first half, but the Lady Warriors were able to carry a seven point lead into halftime, 33-26.

The Lady Warriors pushed the lead to 10, 42-32, with just under 15 minutes to play in the game before the Aggies mounted a rally. Delaware Valley (3-3) scored eight unanswered points to pull within two and then got within one, 44-43, with 11 minutes to play.

Lycoming responded with its own rally, increasing the lead back to eight points, 55-47, with just under six minutes to play.

The Aggies put one final run together, tying the score at 57-57 with 2:25 to play. Lycoming answered back with an 8-0 run to open a 65-57 lead with under a minute to play. Good free throws in the final minute sealed the win.

The last time the Lady Warriors opened a season at 5-1 was the 1999-2000 season, when the team finished with a record of 17-8 and advanced to the conference playoffs.

Andrea Cooper (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) tied the Lycoming school record for blocks in a game, finishing with seven blocks, 10 points and seven rebounds.

Jessica Nabholz (Cressona, Pa.) recorded her first double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Allison Mock (State College, Pa.) led the team with 17 points and six rebounds. Alicia Engler (Williamsport, Pa.) added 13 points.

Delaware Valley was led by Kim Vennera with game-highs of 25 points and 11 rebounds. Jackie Shunkwiler added 16 points and nine rebounds.

The Lady Warriors shot 33.9 percent from the field (22-65) to Delaware Valley’s 33.3 percent (22-66). Lycoming held a slight advantage, 49-45, in rebounding.

The Lady Warriors will travel to King’s on Saturday, Dec. 13. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
