WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Lycoming College women’s basketball team put a stop to Susquehanna’s best start since 1994, registering a 78-55 win against the Crusaders on Tuesday, Dec.2, at Lamade Gymnasium.
Susquehanna entered Tuesday night’s game with an unblemished 6-0 record and had beaten the Lady Warriors in each of the last three meetings between the two schools.
Lycoming came out firing, hitting 7-of-12 3-pointers in the first half to open up a 17 point lead, 38-21, at the intermission.
The hot-shooting Lady Warriors got even better in the second half, shooting 63.6 percent from the field after the break and increasing the lead to as much as 28 points.
In direct contrast to Lycoming’s best shooting percentage performance of the season, Susquehanna turned in its worst of the season, connecting on just 25.7 percent of its shots in the first half and improving to 36.4 percent in the second half.
The Lady Warriors finished the game shooting 57.1 percent from the field (24-of-42) and 56.3 percent from behind the 3-point line (9-of-16). The Crusaders finished at 30.9 percent (21-of-68) and a dismal 6.3 percent from 3-point land (1-of-16).
Susquehanna held a definitive advantage in rebounding, pulling down 45 caroms to Lycoming’s 32.
Alicia Engler (Williamsport, Pa.) led all scorers with a career-high 19 points off the bench. She was 9-of-10 from the free throw line and also added two steals and four assists to her line in the box score.
Allison Mock (State College, Pa.) finished the game with 15 points, including four of the team’s nine 3-pointers. She also led the team in rebounds with seven and handed out four assists.
Rebecca Leid (Denver, Pa.) finished the game with 12 points and five rebounds and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the field.
Andrea Cooper (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) scored 11 points to move into ninth on the all-time scoring list at Lycoming with 925 career points. She now sets her sights on Kristin Friel’s (1986-90) eighth-place number of 968 points.
Susquehanna was led by Libby Shober with a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds. Rachael Hughes and Jessica Zigarelli each finished with eight points for the Crusaders.
The Lady Warriors improve to 4-1 with the win, which matches the team’s start last season. The best opening for Lycoming prior to last season was a 5-1 mark during the 1999-2000 season. Susquehanna drops to 6-1.
Lycoming will travel to Penn State-Hazleton on Thursday, Dec. 4, for a 6 p.m. tip.
