FROSTBURG, Md. – Lycoming trailed Elmira by one point with 30 seconds left, but could not close the gap as the Eagles dealt the Lady Warriors their first loss of the season on Friday, Nov. 21, winning 65-61 in the opening game of the Frostburg Tip-Off Tournament.
The game went to halftime tied at 31-31 and Lycoming opened the second half with the first five points to take a five point lead with 19:11 to play. Elmira rallied back with an 8-0 run to take a 39-36 lead with just over 16 minutes to play.
The Lady Warriors regained the lead, 40-39, with just under 14 minutes to play, but Elmira answered back with a 9-2 run to take a 48-41 lead with 10:33 to play.
The Eagles increased the lead to nine points at 59-50 with 3:39 to play before Lycoming mounted one final comeback. The Lady Warriors mounted a 10-2 run to pull within one point at 61-60 with 30 seconds left in the game, but Elmira connected on all four of its free throw attempts down the stretch to seal the 65-61 win.
Andrea Cooper led the Lady Warriors with 15 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Rebecca Leid had 12 points and eight rebounds and Kaitlyn Ober added 10 points and four rebounds. Allison Mock finished with eight points and six rebounds while Rebecca Spencer added six points off the bench.
Elmira was led by Erin Ruppell with a game-high 17 points and 11 rebounds. Marcia Coakley added 15 points and Mary Symonds chipped in 12.
The Lady Warriors fell cold in the second half, finishing at 34.7 percent from the field on 26-of-75 shooting. Elmira finished the game at 39.7 percent on 25-of-63 shooting.
With the loss, Lycoming drops to 1-1 on the season and will play Frostburg in the consolation game of the tournament on Saturday at 2 p.m. Elmira improves to 2-1 and will face Eastern Mennonite in the championship game at 4 p.m.
