WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Senior Brody Lindsey (Monrovia, Md. / DeMatha Catholic) crushed a grand slam in game one of a doubleheader with the University of Mary Washington to lead the Lycoming College baseball team, which fell, 8-4 and 11-3, to the team that is receiving votes in the D3baseball.com poll, on Sunday, April 26, at Brandon Park.
Lycoming (17-21) closed out their home schedule by honoring 21 seniors, including 17 players who were a part of relaunching the baseball program after a 52-year hiatus in 2023.
In the opener, neither team scored for the first three innings, in part due to Lycoming starter Jake Wilber (Toms River, N.J. / Toms River South) striking out four batters in that time frame.
Mary Washington (24-11) broke the seal in the top of the fourth, scoring on an RBI single from Benjamin Rossi and a sacrifice fly from Ryan Henson to take a 2-0 lead.
The Warriors, though, took the lead in the fifth. Two walks and an infield single loaded the bases with two outs for Lindsey, who ambushed the first pitch he saw and crushed it 385 feet over the fence in left-center for his fifth home run of the season, putting Lycoming in front 4-2 with the grand slam.
Wilber retired the last three batters he faced in the sixth, ending his outing with back-to-back punchouts to hand off a 4-3 lead to the bullpen.
Senior Landon Evans (Millville, Pa. / Millville) came on for the seventh and held the line, brushing aside a two-out single in the seventh, then spinning a 1-2-3 eighth to keep Lycoming in front by a run.
In the ninth, Mary Washington scored five runs to take the 8-4 win.
Lindsey drove in all four runs on his home run, while senior Sean Perkins (Berlin, N.J. / Eastern Regional) reached base four times on two hits and two walks. Wilber worked six innings, allowing three runs on six hits, walking one and tying a career high with seven strikeouts. Evans worked two scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit.
Connor Hassan and Henson each homered and drove in three, while Eric Powell had a double and a homer for Mary Washington. Eagles starter Gavin Riley logged a complete game, allowing four runs on six hits, striking out five and walking three.
In the nightcap, a five-man relay made up of seniors Mason Drozal (Stroudsburg, Pa. / Stroudsburg), Sammy Pollott (Bethesda, Md. / Walter Johnson), Stargell Fuhr (Volant, Pa. / Kennedy Catholic), Matt Guido (Holbrook, N.Y. / Sachem East), and Treyson Green (Celebration, Fla. / Windermere Prep) each threw a scoreless inning, allowing only one hit between them over the first five innings.
Lycoming, meanwhile, held a 1-0 lead throughout that stretch. In the first, sophomore Tyler Wetzel (Hughesville, Pa. / Hughesville) and senior Nick Reeder (Montoursville, Pa. / Montoursville Area) executed a double steal, but an errant throw on the back end allowed Wetzel to scamper home from third.
It remained 1-0 until a two-out solo home run to right from Hassan tied the game at one apiece. The Eagles then took the lead with an eight-run seventh. Lycoming responded by loading the bases in the bottom of the inning for junior Eric MacCluen (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown East), who rolled a single up the middle to score two runs to close the gap to six runs.
MacCluen went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI in the nightcap, while senior Ethan Snyder (Alexandria, Va. / Hayfield) recorded the first multi-hit game of his career with a two-hit day. Wetzel singled, walked, and scored twice, and senior Julien Stellar (Kulpmont, Pa. / Mount Carmel) reached base three times and scored a run in his first action of the season. Drozal, Pollott, Fuhr, Guido, Green, and first year Brayden Maksimik (Shenandoah, Pa. / Shenandoah Valley) all threw a scoreless inning apiece, with Drozal and Maksimik each striking out two batters.
Henson homered and drove in three for Mary Washington, while Hassan, Collin Clarkson, and Powell each drove in two, with Hassan and Clarkson each posting two hits. Matthew Boyd allowed three runs over 6 2/3 innings, striking out six to earn the win for the Eagles.
The Warriors will finish the 2026 season on Saturday, May 2, with a Landmark Conference game at Moravian University. First pitch from Gillespie Field in Bethlehem, Pa., is scheduled for noon.
