MacCluen leads Lycoming vs. Wilkes

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Junior outfielder Eric MacCluen (Downingtown, Pa. / Bishop Shanahan) had three hits and three RBI while becoming the second player in program history to reach 100 career hits as the Lycoming College baseball team fell, 9-6, in a Landmark Conference matchup against league-leading Wilkes University on Tuesday, March 31 at Brandon Park.

Down 9-4 in the ninth, Lycoming did not go quietly. The first three reached in front of MacCluen, who lined his third hit of the day, a two-run single to right-center, bringing the tying run to the plate. After a diving catch in center robbed junior Tyler Iams (Paoli, Pa. / Great Valley) of another potential big hit, a walk loaded the bases with one out. However, back-to-back strikeouts end the Warriors' comeback effort.

Senior Brody Lindsey (Monrovia, Md./DeMatha Catholic) was 3-for-5 with a run and senior Nick Reeder (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) was 2-for-4, as Lycoming (13-12, 6-6) notched 14 hits against the top pitching team in the league.

Wilkes (13-7, 10-1) threatened for a big inning right out of the gate as two hits and a hit batter loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first. However, Lycoming senior starter Landon Evans (Millville, Pa. / Millville) was able to limit the damage to just one run, which scored on a sacrifice fly. The Colonels loaded the bases again in the second, but a 6-4-3 double play allowed Evans to escape with no damage.

In the bottom of the second, the Warriors drew even. Iams drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second. With two outs, sophomore Tyler Wetzel (Hughesville, Pa. / Hughesville) stroked an RBI single to center, tying the game at one.

Wilkes retook the lead in the third. Three of the first four hitters singled, with Devin Markert breaking the tie with an RBI single to center. The Colonels loaded the bases again with one out, then added to the lead on a two-out, two-run double from Evan Melberger, stretching the lead to 4-1 and inning later, added two more runs.

Lycoming trimmed the gap with a fifth inning rally. After a leadoff walk, the Warriors strung together three straight singles. The second was an infield hit by MacCluen to drive in a run for his 100th career hit. After a wild pitch moved two runners into scoring position, Iams rolled a base hit through the middle, scoring a pair to close the gap to 6-4.

Wilkes scratched across an unearned run in the eighth as a hit batter was followed by two wild pitches and a passed ball moving pinch-runner Richie Rossi around the bases to give the Colonels a three-run advantage. In the ninth, Wilkes was aided by a two-run double from Jake Miller to restore their five-run edge.

The Warriors will return to action on Friday, April 3 when they open a three-game Landmark Conference series at Drew University. First pitch from Doc Young Field in Madison, N.J. is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
