Lycoming laces three homers at Drew

Box Score

MADISON, N.J. — Seniors Sean Perkins (Berlin, N.J. / Eastern Regional) and Brody Lindsey (Monrovia, Md. / DeMatha Catholic) and junior Eric MacCluen (Downingtown, Pa. / Bishop Shanahan) all swatted two-run home runs for the Lycoming College baseball team, which fell 14-10 in a Landmark Conference matchup at Drew University on Friday, April 3 at Doc Young Field.

Lycoming (13-13, 6-7) hit a trio of home runs in a game for the first time this season, but Drew (14-8, 6-5) countered with three longballs of their own to claim the opening contest of a three-game series.

A first-inning tally and three more runs in the second gave the Rangers an early lead, but the Warriors tied the game in the third on their first two round-trippers. After a leadoff walk to senior Nick Reeder (Montoursville, Pa. / Montoursville Area), Perkins walloped a 1-0 offering over the fence in left-center for his fourth home run of the season. Three batters later, MacCluen connected for his first homer of the year, bringing Lindsey home to tie the game at four apiece.

Drew responded with a solo shot from Anthony Vallaro in the bottom of the third and another one from Griffin Sherman an inning later. The Rangers also pulled off a double steal to take a 7-4 lead.

In the fifth, the Warriors pulled back within one as Lindsey followed a leadoff walk to Perkins with a two-run shot to left, closing the gap to 7-6 on Lindsey's third home run of the season.

The Rangers scored twice in the fifth, once in the sixth, and four more in the seventh, capping off their scoring on a three-run home run from Nick Donofrio.

In the top of the ninth, Lycoming sent eight consecutive pinch hitters to the plate, loading the bases with one out for junior Rhys Evans (New Market, Md. / Oakdale), who roped a pinch-hit two-run double. First year Zach Woskobunik (Winchester, Va. / James Wood) followed with his first career hit and an RBI, a pinch-hit single of his own that brought home a third run. A groundout from first year Nathaniel Wilk (Columbia, Md. / Hammond) brought in the final run of the day for the Warriors, who brought the tying run to the on-deck circle in their final push.

Lindsey led the way with two hits, two runs, and two RBI, while MacCluen and Perkins each drove in two runs on their homers, with Perkins scoring twice as well. Reeder added two hits, a stolen base, and scored a run. Sophomore left-hander Garrett Leitzel (Mount Pleasant, Pa. / Midd-West) spun a scoreless eighth inning on the mound in his collegiate debut.

Donofrio reached four times for Drew, with two hits, two walks, a home run, three RBI, and a stolen base, while Shenman homered and drove in two runs as part of a two-hit day. Frank Master reached base four times on two hits and two walks, with two steals and three runs scored. Reliever Nick Garboosian added three scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the Rangers.

The Warriors and Rangers will finish their series with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 4. First pitch of game one is scheduled for noon from Doc Young Field.
