Warriors fall at buzzer against Susquehanna

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – In a back-and-forth game with 10 lead changes and eight ties, a last-second shot fell off the side of the rim to help Susquehanna University escape Lamade Gym with an 85-84 Landmark Conference win over the Lycoming College men's basketball team on Wednesday evening, Jan. 7.

Billy Anderson hit a game-winning layup inside with 12 seconds left for the River Hawks (8-4 overall, 4-1 Landmark). The Warriors (4-8 overall, 0-5 Landmark) took a pair of timeouts on the ensuing possession and got a good look on a hook shot as time expired, but it hit the back rim and fell off.

Sophomore Princeton Layton (Katy, Texas/Katy Paetow) posted 25 points and six rebounds, junior Hayden Pardoe (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) added 21 points, six rebounds and two steals, senior Isaiah Valentine (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) added 15 points and two assists and first-year Noa'Sosa Friedman (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier) posted 10 points, nine rebounds and four assists.

The River Hawks came back from a nine-point deficit with 6:31 left to take a 79-78 lead with 3:17 left, but the Warriors responded in the final moments, which featured two ties and two lead changes. The Warriors took the lead on a pair of free throws from Pardoe with 1:20 left before Brandon Lavitt hit a free throw with 56 seconds left to make it a one-point game and after a missed jumper by the Warriors, Anderson's layup gave the River Hawks the final lead.

Susquehanna opened the second half on an 20-14 run to lead 54-48 with 14:18 left, but the Warriors hit a pair of 3-pointers, one from Valentine and one from Layton to tie the game with 13:48 left, igniting a 28-13 run which gave Lycoming a 76-67 lead with 6:31 left. The River Hawks scored the next eight points to close within a point, where the lead stood with 3:47 left.

The River Hawks led by nine at 29-20 with 6:02 left in the first half when the Warriors posted an 11-point run, started on a 3-pointer from Pardoe and finished on three free throws from Layton, giving Lycoming a 31-29 lead with 3:20 left. The River Hawks scored the next five points before the Warriors closed the period with five of their own, with Layton hitting a 3-pointer in transition to take a 36-34 lead at the break.
